Hello everyone,

I am a newbie here! Today (9/18/12) I received my IVC filter. I was so worried about getting this done, but now that I have I can tell you it isn't all that bad. The worst part to me was the numbing meds they gave me in my neck. It burned like crazy. Other than that it was smooth sailing! The filter was inserted within 15 mins and I was wheeled out to recovery about 10 Mins after. I am having surgery on Thursday the 20th! I am super excited now!

An ivc filter is a small filter they place in the big blood vessel in your belly to prevent blood clots from your legs moving up to your heart and lungs. Usually they are used in patients with high risk of clotting.

I had hip surgery and it was placed in me if you have had problems with clotting you would have had one. I have had several surgerys but I did not get one until I had hip surgery 3 or 4 years ago. Not to worry just precaustion for folks we have had this problem. I dont have a surgery date yet.

Sorry I'm now just answering your questions, but yes typically the IVC filter is used to help prevent DVT( deep vein thrombosis) and Pulmonary embolisms due to blood clots. Although I had mine placed as an extra precaution as a request from my surgeon, because of my high bmi. My bmi is just under 60. If anyone have any other questions feel free to private message me!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
