Did you slowly give it up pre op or just cold turkey after surgery? I am 28 days away from surgery and have cut down but not out all the way.

I gave mine up pre-op, cutting down one at a time until I was off it. Caffeine was my hardest addiction to break pre-op. I've been decaffeinated since then. I drank a lot of Decaf iced tea and Water with mio drops...and still do.

I used to drink Diet Coke all the time, now I drink caffine free Diet Coke after it has gone flat. That way I get my Diet Coke fix and my belly is happy.

I gave up other tougher, more meaningful things...like ice cream and food...and I drank quite a bit of green tea, which has minimal caffeine in it, but which satisfied. I started making Lipton special teas, and crystal lite...experimented with generic mixes...and had diet soda sometimes. I had a small craving for some diet soda a bit yesterday, but honestly the Crystal lite does the trick. Maybe I'll have some diet soda down the road, but nothing off the menu is worth the risk while my stomach and wounds are still healing.

I cut myself off 4 months before my surgery. I knew this would be the hardest thing to quite. My surgeon wouldn’t do the procedure if I wasn’t off of the diet coke so I had no choice.

Not yet sure when my surgery will be but I am on day 3 of no Coke. It's killing me lol. I figured I had to do it early so that it's not a problem later. I did the weaning thing as well. I only had one or two a day before but weaned myself down and now none. I miss them so.

It's hardest in the beginning. I'm going on week three of no diet coke! Don't miss it as much as I thought I would at this point. I used to get Nasty head aches. When I quit I started drinking A ton a Water and that seemed to help. Plus I don't eat the greasy or carb filled food I used to that the diet coke would accompany so i dont seem as inclined towards wanting it... I am also still pre op. Looking more like it will be in December or January but want it dealt with now.... Goo luck to everyone!!

I'm down to one (lovely, wonderful) vanilla Coke Zero every morning! I knew caffeine was going to be difficult for me to break up with, so I started VERY slowly weaning after finding out from the NUT it had to go. I'll miss it!

I weaned myself down, first caffeine free, and then totally. I am now 7 weeks post op and I still dont care for any liquids at all. I dont drink diet coke beause I know the flat version wouldn't do it so it's not worth it but it is the one thing I miss more than anything after 2 months out. I'm tired of being thirsty and nothing quenches and I cant get enough of any liquid. Good luck.

I gave up Diet Coke long before my surgery. I never thought I would be able to because I was super addicted. The first week or two were hard and after that it was out of my system and I was good. I don't know what they put in that stuff but it is addictive, and I don't think it's the caffeine I was addicted to.

Diet Coke/Diet Pepsi - this was the hardest of all! I quit cold turkey, and went through the caffeine withdrawls (headaches). It is the only thing I still crave - almost two months after my surgery. Having gone through the surgery, recovery, etc., I absolutely don't want to do any harm or reversal (stretching the stomach), so I guess I will concede that soda and carbonation will never be on my menu again :( Definitely one of those things I should have appreciated more when I could drink it!

Quit diet coke and coffee on my 10day pre-op diet..Uuggh it was hard. Sometimes I will have a cup of coffee, but I'm leaving soft drinks alone.

Today was my first caffeine free day since probably high school! I was so sleepy and foggy headed. LOL

Totally off topic..but you look like a totally different person in your new profile picture. You look amazing. I can't wait to read your blog.

I tried crystal lite yesterday and it works. I am down to two diet cokes a day. So in 27 more days I should be at 0.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
