Bufflehead 6,358 Posted September 17, 2012 Hi, I am pre-op, but I can tell you just from doing my research here that YES, Hair loss is very common, most people experience it after wls. However, for the vast majority of people, it stops about 3 - 6 months after it starts and your hair grows back. A lot of people have different theories about Vitamins or minerals that can be used to help with hair loss: Protein, zinc (be very careful with zinc supplementing as too much zinc is very dangerous), B-12, Iron, etc. If you want something to help cover up any thinning spots temporarily, look into products like Nanogen, Toppik, or Sally Jessy's Great Hair Day. They are powders that you shake into your hair and thicken it and cover up any scalp that might show through. This part I am experienced with b/c I have pretty bad hair loss even before surgery and I use these products myself already. You can Google them and find places to buy them. My personal favorite is Nanogen but they are all good. Good luck! 2 Tabassom and AbacoRaveness reacted to this
crystalintville 66 Posted September 17, 2012 Does your Multi-Vitamin have Biotin? You may want to add in a biotin Vitamin and Nioxin or another Protein type Shampoo and make sure you get in your 60-80 grams of protein a day. The Hair loss is normal from 3-8 months. From my profile pic I had pretty long hair but for the past few weeks I've been shedding worse than my cats, washing my hair, brushing, flat ironing, driving with a window down, sitting still.. long blonde hairs were getting on everyone so Saturday I had it cut in layers above my shoulders. The girl shampooed it and combed it out and gobs were coming out and she said I see why you're having it cut short... It looks fuller and though it's still falling out, it doesn't look it such big qtys. Good luck, it will get better . 1 Tabassom reacted to this
SexySlim 107 Posted September 17, 2012 My hair started falling out heavily after about 4 months. I got worried and started taking Biotin. I only took it for a few weeks because I noticed my other hair (underarm, leg, down below) was growing back super fast and I hated it! I stopped taking the Biotin, and am just now starting to notice that my Hair loss is not as severe anymore. I'm not sure if I can credit the Biotin or not because 1) I only took it for maybe 2 weeks and 2) I heard after 6 months the hair loss starts to slow down or stop and on the 28th I will be at my 6 months. I also heard that it can't be avoided, so that's another reason why I stopped taking the Biotin. 1 Tabassom reacted to this

Threetimesacharm 1,400 Posted September 17, 2012 My surgeon has prescribed me to take Biotin. It is proven to stop Hair loss. You have nothing to lose but hair if you take it. I have just started and I had surgery last monday.

VanishingAct 4 Posted September 18, 2012 so does Biotin work? Can people that have used it as prescribed please weigh in on this subject...I do not want to have bald Patches...and is it Patches of hairloss' date=' or just regular all over hairloss...hmm I need this answered - thanks so much[/quote'] I started taking Biotin 5,000mcg/day at 2 weeks post-op in anticipation of the hair loss saga. As expected, I did notice that my hair started shedding more (maybe 6-8 strands each time I showered) starting at about 4 weeks post op. it never got worse than that so I thought I was one of the lucky ones. I started getting laxed about taking the Biotin around 3mo post-op. Within 2 weeks of not taking the biotin regularly (ie. once every 3-4 days instead of daily) my hair started shedding like crazy, I was losing 20+ strands each time I shampood, plus more when I brushed or ran my fingers through my hair. I've been back on 5,000mcg Biotin per day for 2 weeks now and the Hair loss has slowed right back down again. Hope this helps!
Cookeeeeez 269 Posted September 18, 2012 I lost hair after pneumonia bout this year. A big round patch completely fell out. This is called alopecia areata. This is a stress response by your body to conserve energy for vital organ function. You may also notice your nails will weaken. If you are very concerned about Patches of Hair loss, see a dermatologist for a topical steroidal cream to stimulate Hair growth in that area. You may also opt for injections of steroids as I did. Biotin is in many good Multivitamins and may have some effect for some people. However my dermatologist told me not to waste my money. Normal hair growth should resume within 6 weeks of the loss depending on the state of your overall health. But basically hair is NOT essential to your survival so in times of stress or rapid weight loss your body is defending itself. Persistent hairloss as such should be a concern not for vanities sake but as a sign your body is under continuing stress and you should improve your overall health including Protein and vegetables (not just one individual supplement or Vitamin etc) Good luck! 1 Catracks reacted to this

Best advice here! Is is a stress response,. Your body is going to put resources where they are needed most and hair is one of the last on the list. Take your multi and Calcium as we all should, but don't waste time or money on the supplements and cures. It's going to grow back.
EmyWemy 32 Posted September 19, 2012 Thanks for this topic. I've been experiencing a lot of Hair loss at 5-1/2 months out and it's discouraging even though I'm reassured by other posts that it will grow back. Thanks for the suggestion of Biotin as I will give that supplement a try this week.
bsmith 35 Posted September 21, 2012 I began to lose a lot of hair around 5 months post op. Having super thin hair already, I was mortified. I did all kinds of researched found out that not meeting your Protein requirement is partly to blame. I went to Walmart and bought Biotin (5000mg) and I take 2 a day. I'm now 7 mo out and my hair has stopped falling out (quickly slowed after I started biotin) and I have a ton of new growth on top. My sprouts shoot out all over the place. I would suggest upping your protein and using biotin and seeing what happens.
