On the other hand mammameg I am preop as well just waiting on insurance approval my children are almost 4 and 2.5 and I'm doing this NOW! Of course I share your fears: what if something happens? Etc etc. but what happens if I do nothing ? How long before I eat myself in to a stroke or heart attack or diabetes? How am I going to help them steer clear of obesity if I can't do it myself. I'm opting for the tool for my family not just for me , doing it now just extends the time I'll have as healthy mommy sexy wife . I want to enjoy that new improved me for as long as possible !

My youngest will be 2 days shy of 12 months old the day I go into surgery. My husband will be watching all 3 of our kiddos and my husband will be leaving for school a month after my surgery. I, just like all moms worry about the what ifs and it's my times to do something for myself. I can't keep putting off getting healthy. I do hope and pray that I don't experience complications and I'm just focused on staying positive.

No matter how many posts you read about having the surgery when you have small children, you will always here the good and bad. I recommend talking to your doctor about your concerns. I also recommend that if you have the surgery make sure you have help. My husband took a week off of work with FMLA and took over watching the kids so I had as much time to heal as possible before I started caring for them by myself. I would not have been able to do it without him. Almost 5 weeks post op my husband still asks if I need a nap when he gets home from work. It comes down to your comfort level. Everyone heals differently and experience post op differently. I am so happy I had the surgery. I am a nursing mom and I had things planned so well that I was nursing my son at the hospital and had my home set up so I was careful with stairs, lifting, bending, and even getting out of bed. We put a recliner in the bedroom so I could get up easier and also nurse my son. My doctor gave me great advice and realistic expectations. I wish you luck. This is a life changing surgery and is a hard decision when you have little ones depending on you.

Allie- how old is your son that you are nursing? I'm still breastfeeding but I'm weaning my baby girl before the surgery because I was having a hard time finding others who are nursing and having wls. I didn't think I'd be able to get in enough fluids and would dry up quickly from the surgery. My 11 1/2 month old is down to 4 feedings a day but today she's only nursed once. I haven't told my surgeon because I planned to have her weaned by this weekend. Let me know what your experience has been when it comes to nursing and the sleeve. I would love to continue but since I wasn't able to find anyone who has done it, I just assumed that it wasn't possible. Thanks

I have 3 kids under 6 all with Autism. I am very nervous about after surgery as only one of my kids is potty trained. But, I am tough and my DH is great. We will make it work.

Hey! My son will be a year old on the 27th. I nurse twice a day now because I did lose a little of my supply. Who is your surgeon??? My surgeon fully supported my nursing. I have had an amazing experience and nursing really helped me through my recovery. My son kicked me once in a while, but the boppy was heaven sent! If you want to still nurse tell your surgeon!

I'd give it at least two weeks to watch her. It should be at least 6 weeks to pick her up.

My kids are also 3 and 16 months :-). My surgery date is 10/2. I talked with my doctor regarding lifting the kids and he did say I probably shouldn't pick them up or let them crawl on me for the first few weeks. I'll have lots of help with the kids so I won't have to worry.

As for the risk ... I could drop dead of a stroke or heart attack any minute. I need to do this now for my kids not only so I can be here for them for a long time but so that I can be a role model for them by living a healthy lifestyle so maybe they won't be in my situation 30 years from now.

I also vividly remember the kids at school making fun of me because my mom was heavy (and I was too). I don't want to put my kids through that, kids are mean enough without giving them a reason to tease.

My chance to get healthy is now and I suspect your chance is now too.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
