Newbie Saying Hello

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just found this site. I'm 2 weeks post surgury, and strugling with the mind game. I'm mourning the loss of food - junk food really. I know I had to have an operation because of self-inflicted obesity, but still, the idea of not being able to eat whatever I like when I like is getting to me. Ilogical, but real.

I'm still on the liquid diet. Feel like I haven't eaten (chewed) anything for ages. Its been 5 weeks. Another week to go, then onto puree.

Anyway, enough of my whinning. Look forward to getting a heap of information/help out of this site.

Greetings from New Zealand.

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

I had surgery September 4th and I also mourn food. It's sad really something that has been part of your life for so long and it's just so different now. I used food socially, to meet with friends, to talk to my family. Now I have had a major adjustment. I call my friend to go for a walk. My family and I went to the movies today. I miss food. I start the pureed portion on Tuesday and I am looking forward to it. Good Luck in your journey. I just think of how much healthier and happier I am without the weight. It has helped me because I am truly not hungry anymore:)

Hello! Welcome. I know it helped me to focus on the fact I wasn't a slave to food anymore. Now I have more time to explore things that interest me and spend more time with people I love or even meet new people. As I lose weight I am feeling healthier, less self-concious and more energetic. All of this is much more life affirming than life depleting junk food. Hang in there....allow yourself to mourn and then think of all the positive changes.

I had mine done 8/23 and you do miss chewing when you know you can't but now that I can have the mushies i find myself choosing the shakes and Soups more. I do still crave pickles but that has always been a love of mine. It just is easier to get my Protein in the shakes and now that i can add fruit they are yummy. And i never have been a sweets eater. So it does get easier i promise. I no longer really have cravings... except pickles. Lol

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
