101 Lbs Down And A Lecture From My Doc?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday was my 6 month checkup with my surgeon. I was so excited to go to the appointment because Tuesday I reached 101 lb weight loss.

Instead of telling me how good I was doing, I got a lecture about eating too much! He asked me what I ate the day before and I told him Greek yogurt and a sugar free Starbucks frap for Breakfast, tilapia for lunch, Premier Protein shake mid afternoon, chicken for dinner and a sugar free Popsicle for snack. He said I am eating 5 times a day and should only be eating 3 meals a day.

He also said I am eating too many calories. I get in between 1000 and 1200 a day, but I do 40 minutes on the treadmill at least 5 times a week which burns more than 300 calories. He said I should only eat 3 times a day and stay between 600 and 800 calories a day. Then he said forget about the calories all together and just eat 3 small meals and I will do fine.

I am really struggling with his advice. What I am doing is working just fine. I am very happy losing 101 lbs in a little over 6 months. I've decide not to follow his advice and to stick with what is working for me. I've NEVER hit a stall and the weight loss has been steady. Why mess with it?

How much is everyone else eating at 6 months out?

Hi

Why fix something that isnt broken?

If what you are doing is working for you, keep doing it.Especially without a stall!!!!!!

Most people say 800 calories only but believe me the way you are losing with a little more is super.Your metabolism will not be affected by long term too low calories either.

Keep rocking your sleeve the way you have been!

Please keep us informed as you lose.

Maybe he thinks you should be loosing more or have lost more weight at this point.

Maybe he is going off stats or something.

I know I was told I can do 3 meals a day at 4oz each and 2 Snacks or I can do 6 meals a day at 2oz each and 2 snacks in a day and it was up to me how I wanted to eat little and often is classed at the 6 meals and more normal is the 3 meals.

A lot of doctors know the first what 6-8 months is the most/rapid weightloss so want you to be like extra double hard and do as much as you can before it slows down and your eating more normal and it then becomes harder to loose weight.

Gotta say I was never told to calorie count or get less than x amount of carbs just told Protein first low fat low carb little to no sugar and use my head in what I am eating.

Everyone will say different things we are told different things so good luck!

congrats on losing 101 lbs!

my doctor told me i should only eat 2 meals a day... so at least yours wants you to eat 3.

i am sorry to sound rude or mean, i don't have that intent.. but i have to ask.. why did you bother having surgery and why does everyone suggest for everyone else that you follow what your doctor says to a t... then you go get a checkup & blow off what your doctor says, because you think you know better?... i mean... why did you go to him in the first place, if you don't want to listen to him?

did you ask him why he wanted you to cut back on your food intake?.. personally, i don't let my doctor leave the room until he answers all my questions to my satisfaction. i do my own research about things online & i come to forums like this & then i ask him why he wants me to do or take certain things.. and i tell him right then if i'm willing to do it or not. lol i mean.. i want him to know what i'm doing to myself, so he can help me.. he saved my life once already.. but i let him know when i'm not comfortable with something or if i don't understand or whatever.

if you go the medical route, then you have to believe that the doctors are supposed to be there to help you & there's a reason he wants you to eat the way he said....

take my opinion cum grano salis (with a grain of salt)..

Does a sugar free popsicle count as food? I was told 4-5 mini meals by my doc. I know every doc is different. I usually eat Breakfast between 0730-0800, lunch @ 12:30, dinner around 5:30-6:00 and then a Protein supplement @ bedtime (a Protein Shake, yogurt, etc). Sometimes if I'm just dying mid-afternoon, I will have 1/2 a Quest bar, a few nuts, or something else protein based to tide me over until dinner.

101 pound in 6 months is fabulous!Your dr should have encouraged you to keep it up.So even with dr's, opinion are like &£@oles and everyone has got one, isnt it?

Your menu seems spot on,your Proteins enough,no visible carbs, what more does he want?

Maybe you should send him an email and just give him a breakdown of your calories, carbs, proteins per day and ask him to explain why he wants it differently.

I personally wouldnt even bother as your diet is working for you,you are happy and satisfied, just keep it up.

O,and dr's are not always right. Then mine that says the sleeve will get you thin,no diet restictions but just small portions is also right and everyone that is sleeved for LONGER than a month or 2 knows exactly how well that will work in the long run.I have to also cut carbs just like 90 persent here or I lose very slowly!

xxo

Yesterday was my 6 month checkup with my surgeon. 101 lb weight lost, I got a lecture about eating too much!

Deb

IMO your dr was very rude to you

telling a patient certain things/how to eat differently, yes he is the dr and you do need to listen to him - but he doesn't have to give you a lecture

whatever he tells you, today tomorrow or ever, he doesn't need to be rude/mean to you - he could and should be a little more caring/and have a better repoir with you/his patient

in other words he should improve his bedside manner

losing over 100 lbs is so terrific -

he should have commented on your excellent weight loss - then nicely he could have advised you on what you feel you should be doing differently

IMO - for what is worth, you have been very successful

but you need/must listen to your dr.- even if he is a SOB

good luck

Well, surgeons aren't always right about everything, but sometimes they do give us things to think about. Right now, your capacity is still fairly limited, so if you're eating 3 meals and 2 Snacks you're still keeping your calories at a reasonable level, you're getting great exercise in, and you're making great progress! It's possible that down the road as you can eat more, you will eat more. Each of those meals and Snacks may become a little larger, and since they're already a habit, it could be difficult to cut back. And eating that frequently could turn into "grazing", which can tun into a lot of calories in a day.

It's possible your surgeon has seen patients get into trouble down the road because they got into the habit of eating frequently during the day. That does not mean you're going to be one of those patients. But, it might be a good reason for you to take a hard look at yourself and where your triggers and bad habits lurk to think about whether you might turn out to be one of those patients.

It sounds to me like you're doing great. Awesome, in fact. But I know a lot of successful maintainers that never went over 800 calories during the losing stage, and mostly kept closer to 600, and were getting in substantial exercise on top of it. I'm not one of those people, I think at 6 months I was closer to 1000 calories like you, particularly if I was burning 300+ calories in a workout, and like you, I never experienced a real stall (I went 5 days once without losing, and that was my worst so-called wimpy "stall"). But it definitely gets harder the further out you are post-op. I've been dinking around trying to lose the last 10 pounds for 6 months now, and I know I'd have sped past "goal" if I'd been one of those more disciplined folks. I don't exactly regret the path I took, but there are pros and cons to each path. I'm not telling you to change what you're doing, but just to consider it.

In the mean time, congratulations! (And post some progress pics so we can all ooh and aah about how awesome you look!!) :D

First off gratz on the 100 lb loss!!!!!!!!! I hope to join you on the loser bench. I do not blame you for being upset, I think your doc needs to work on his bedside manner. He should have congratulated you and then spent the time explaining his thought process to you. I am not a doctor but I feel pretty sure his thinking is along these lines..

The sleeve use to be done as a step one procedure for people who had very high BMI, it was thought you could not lose enough with the sleeve to have it be a stand alone. The thinking on this has changed some and with newer techniques and better management it is working well on its own for many people. However the honeymoon phase, meaning the period when you lose the most, the easiest is the first 6 months, then it gets harder. your doctor probably just wants to make sure you lose as much as you can while you still have the most restriction.

Over the years all of the research I've read on metabolism has pointed to the idea that small meals more often are better for keeping your metabolism up. The longer between meals and the fewer you have, the more likely your body will think you're going into starvation mode. What did your NUT say about this? I am surprised too, my NUT told me they want me to get six small meals in a day (3 meals and 3 snacks) and that's been difficult for me. Usually I get 3 meals and 1 or 2 Snacks. On school days I only get in my 3 meals. Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about it, if you're losing and you feel good you might wanna stay on the same pace you have been. Or you could try his opinion for a while and see how it goes. Either way 101 pounds - you are kicking butt! Keep it up =)

I would ask your Doctor to be more specific. The first few months are very important because that is where you will lose the most weight. At 6 months out, he might be thinking you should have lost more. I ate about 800-1000 calories the first 6 months after my surgery and then increased it to about 1200 until I reached my goal at 9 months. Why it is true that eating more meals and spreading your calories out during the day will keep your metabolism going and help you lose weight, the calorie deficit early in is very important. I would talk with your Doctor and NUT and get a plan to work toward your goal. You are doing something right because 100 lbs. is awesome. Do not be afraid to question your Doctor and tell him to make you understand his thinking.

Oh dear... I hate to tell anyone not to listen to their doctor but in this case I will  .

What you are doing is working. Beautifully. Its also giving you a fantastic chance of not frying your metabolism for years to come. I have to wonder if the whole lose-weight-as-fast-as-you-can-while-you-can thing is a consequence of starving your body and getting in fast before your metabolism resets itself (semi?) permanently.

Also, big breath before I say this because once again, I hate ignoring doctors' advice... Surgeons are surgeons. Not obesity experts. Just because they know how to perform obesity surgery doesn't mean they have expended the same time and effort on exploring the many, many hotly debated theories on optimal weight loss. There are so many differing approaches and it will probably be years, if ever, before a final 'best' option is agreed to.

Bottom line: you are doing great. Spectacularly :) . Keep it up and don't risk screwing it up based on advice that equates to permanently starving yourself.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
