I had my EGD this morning. The final step before being sleeved next Thursday.

All went extremely well this morning. No problems at all. Cleared for surgery.

Not sure what juice they used on me today, but it was pretty potent. I came home and slept it off for 5 hours. Still feeling sluggish, but doing very well.

Six days to go. The liquid diet has allowed me to drop a total of 15 pounds. Another 15 would be wonderful, but I'd be ok with another 10.

Let's get this party started! :D

What is EGD?

An EGD is when the doctor goes in with a camera in your mouth, down your esophagus, stomach and part of the small intestine.

It is to check that everything is looking good and in good working order prior to having the sleeve done. It's a pretty important test considering a good portion of your stomach will be removed.

They put you out completely. The last think you remember is the anesthesiologist putting a ring in your mouth. After that, you wake up in recovery. A procedure that takes literally less than 10 minutes. The anesthesia takes all day to get out of your system, though.

Oh, wow, that even scares the crap out of me. Do they do it to every sleeve patient?!

It really isn't that bad. I am glad that they do the test. I wouldn't want to have a sleeve if the important part of eating isn't up to snuff!

I'm not sure if everyone is required to have an EGD. Every doctor and insurance company is different. You can ask your surgeon if you need to have it.

Joisey01 - I will be with you on the 20th. The liquide diet is going better than I expected. I was traveling all week so just shaking up the Protein Drinks and not enjoying them but as soon as I got home I made one with the blender. What a difference! Felt like I was drinking a DQ blizzard!!!

Hi Noreen! I've been looking for you around here. I figured you must be traveling.

I can't just shake up the Protein shakes. I LOVE them done in the blender! I've learned to add sugar free stuff to bump up the flavor.

I have to be there at 08:30 with my surgery at 10:15. When is yours?

Hey, my EGD went really fast this morning! I do have a soar throat. I was told next week the Doc will be repairing my hiatal hernia he discovered today. The anesthesia they gave me burned quite a bit for like 15 seconds and then I was out.

I know you were pretty scared last night. I'm glad it went as well as it did for you! I don't even have a sore throat at all. They found nothing wrong on the way down the gullet. I am very lucky.

The anesthesia didn't do anything but knock me out and make me happy, happy, happy. I came home and slept it off for 5 hours. I'm fine now. I'm not even hungry, but I did have a shake just to be sure I had something. I'm making up for lost time on my liquids, tho.

I am SOOOOOO happy you're ok! I was thinking of you! ;)

Yeah, you were right, no biggy at all! I came home and slept for a hour or so but have since been catching up like you on the shakes/water. I'm still amazed at how fast it was over. I got in the room at 730 and woke up around 745--doc was already talking to hubby. The hernia part did surprise as I have not had any symptoms whatsover; the Doc wanted to do the EGD just to know what things looked like before the surgery...now I am really glad he did--no surprises now. Thanks for the input!!!

You are welcome Nacol. I'm just glad you are doing well. I was concerned with your worry from last night.

Hernias don't always give you grief. At least you can get it taken care of BEFORE it becomes a problem!

AuroraB: i think it depends on your doctor and your comorbidities/symptoms. i am getting sent because i have heartburn/reflux. because the sleeve can cause reflux he wants to get a good look in there and make sure there is no damage to the lining of my esophagus and stomach. mine is also checking for haital hernia and if i do have it he will repair it will i get the sleeve done.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
