I and my son just registered for the informational seminar. I also had the bariatric group do an insurance verification and they called to say my plan does cover the surgery, which is awesome. My question is...do they do physical exams to determine your health? I have high blood pressure, how do they handle that. I know I will ask this of the doctors as well but I figure you've all been there done that, except of course, us who are just started the journey...and are FREAKED OUT! Thanks for any info.

(insurance wanted this) I had to ask my primary Dr. to refer me to the Bariatric Dr. and sent a report about my HBP and health issues. I have not taken 1 pill for HBP since surgery!!!!! and its normal now!

I have high bp as well. It's my only comorbidity but my PCP expects it to come down after surgery. From reading all of these forums, all of the requirements are different. Before getting a date I had to get an EKG, chest xray and lots of (expensive) blood work. I was lucky and didn't need any of the other consults. Some of the other options on the form that the surgeon requires for some patients in my program are cardiology tests, pulmonology tests, sleep study, gastroenterology clearance, pap test & mammogram if female, and a colonoscopy if over age 50.

There's lots of stuff to do but hopefully it will go quickly for you. Good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
