How Much Of Regular Food Can U Eat Now After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm only 3wks out and it only takes about 4oz of yogurt to fill me up. I'm having a hard time tryin to figure out how I will be able to eat solid food again at all?! I wud like to hear others experience with returning to solid foods.

Well, at three weeks out your stomach is still healing and probably swollen from the surgery, so it's expected that it won't be able to hold its full volume yet. I am at 8 weeks and can only hold about 7-8 oz. It seems like this won't happen, but it will- just give it some time.

Trust me, it will happen soon enough. I thought the same thing but I progressed slowly. I am 7 months out and can do about a cup of food at a meal, sometimes less, just depends on what it is.

I'm 13 weeks post-op, and am still only able to eat 2-3 ounces of "dense protein" (i.e. meat). I can eat 1/4 cup cottage cheese along with 1/4 cup tuna salad (total 1/2 cup). Sometimes I'm able to eat a couple pieces of veggies (carrots, green Beans, asparagus, etc) along with my 2-3 ounces of meat. I don't push myself (I've learned not to...the consequences are very uncomfortable!), and I supplement with Protein Shakes, gelatein 20, or Protein Bars, to ensure I get enough Protein every day.

Girl right now measure....make that 1/4 cup and mayyyyybbbeee 1/2 cup your friend, items that are more liquid are not a problem, but measure anyway so you dont over do it...remember 1/4 measuring cup is your new friend for a little while and chewwwwwwwwwwww slowly....

Your capacity will grow over time. At 8 months post op now I can have an entire normal sized ham sandwich and I'm full

The swelling is suppose to go away at four weeks and them you will be able to tolerate more than just a few spoon fills of things. I can't eat but half of a turkey sandwich or half of a half sized salad. Prior to surgery I could eat 4-5 claws of snow crab legs now 1 claw and I'm done.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
