Why is it bad to guzzle Water or any other drink after the sleeve?

Does it stretch the sleeve?

My experience was that it doesn't give the Water time to settle and I ended up throwing up. I think it has to have time to go through the stomach and continue on its way and if you guzzle it backs up into the stomach and then you end up getting sick. Someone else may have a more medically logical answer, but this is my translation in plain terms. :)

My surgeon told me Water alone will not stretch the sleeve, but carbonated drinks will. I wish I could "guzzle" but my stomach only holds so much and the rest comes back up....

Plus it's painful when I take too much in....

No, it will not stretch the sleeve, in fact, sleeve stretching is nearly impossible.

The reason you don't want to "guzzle" Water after surgery is because your stomach is swollen , irrataded, and healing. You will only be abe to ingest very small amounts. And since your sleeve will be basicly numb for a while you don't really want to put that kind of pressure on it

After a couple months it is fine to "guzzle" a bottle of water if you so choose.

Have you had a bad experience drinking water? I notice you are over 6 months post-op

Thanks all!

I am 6 1/2 mo post op so I am trying to figure out which rules still apply. I am able to guzzle fairly well without getting sick. I love Water and crystal light and just wondering if I am doing any harm to my sweet sleeve......

I really appreciate your input. I don't think I was able to guzzle until now either~!

You all are awesome, thanks for your input.

I only 5 weeks out and I can drink really easy . I can't guzzle a whole bottle of Water at a time but I can drink a whole bottle in about 25 minutes . My nut says that's ok .

I am the same way with Water only! I am 2 weeks post op now, and able to drink a bottle of water in about 30-40 min if I wanted. I can't take large drinks, but I can take a normal "sip" and keep doing that 4-5 times in a row. Put it down, wait a bit, then again. I have no issues drinking water. Other things (milk, no sugar juice, ect) I have to sip.

I am pretty good at drinking lots of Water ( flavored mostly) in 10-20 minutes. It is probably about 22 oz to 32 oz and it appears to have little effect, with the exception if I really drink fast in a 10 second period. I will catch myself doing this sometimes, feel the pressure and then remember not to do this now that I had the sleeve. It did take me at least a mon to get past the point of drinking more then 2 oz at a time. I had heard from numerous folks that water cannot stretch the sleeve, so am not real concerned yet. I am really good with the basics of not drinking around eating foods. Any thoughts?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
