Big No NO! Adding liquids "drinking" while eating is the easiest way to stretch your pouch or sleeve! No liquids 30 mins before meal or 30 mins after !

Ummm, stretching your sleeve really is not a concern, in fact it's nearly impossible. But here is a video that illustrates why we don't drink while eating or soon after.

Interesting, although I wonder why it doesn't work like that pre-surgery? I can drink a ton of Water with my meal and I don't think it makes me hungry any sooner or later. Actually they say to have a glass of Water before you eat to help curb your appetite. It doesn't just flow through.

I thought the reason for no drinking and eating was because you need to get Protein in and if you fill up with liquid, you won't be able to get enough in?

For the most part we don't chew our food as thoroughly as we should pre-op

What OTR said. Plus, preop your stomach is a lot more stretchy. Post op your sleeve will not be near as flexible. It will not tolerate the addition of a bunch of Fluid right after you eat.

Even now, on an empty stomach I can pretty much guzzle water. But even 30 minutes after I eat I can still only take a couple of sips.

What if I eat cottage cheese? I never followed that no drinking after I eat 60 min rule because cottage cheese was listed on my full liquids list, so I figured liquid is liquid.

Cottage cheese is already pretty thin. So drinking with it will only thin it out even more, thus completely bypassing any restriction you might have had.

The reason you should not drink til 30 minutes after is that you need to fill up on Protein and wit 30 minutes because you will not let your body get the proper nutrients. My doctor said it will not stretch your sleeve, but if you do it all the time, it may put our body into starvation mode.

So what if I fill up on Protein and then drink 5 minutes after....will I go into starvation mode?

Answer....No.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
