Pulmonary Wouldn't Clear Me- Upset!

Recommended Posts

So I had my appointment with the pulmonary yesterday and she asked me some questions. I was honest and told her I hadn't been using my CPAP every night but I do use it most nights (my sleep apnea is very mild anyway- I only use 6 on pressure) She didn't think I've been using it enough so she wants to see me again in a month before she clears me for surgery. I'm so upset. I have an appointment with the surgeon Tuesday and I was suppose to get my date then- which would give me an October surgery date. Now I'm not sure that will happen. I'm trying not to be disappointed since this will only slow me down a few weeks to a month but I still am dissapointed when I've waited this long already. I known I need to make sure I use the CPAP every single night for the full 8 hours now- which I am. Has this happened to anyone else?

The pressure does not set how bad the need for a cpap is mine is 13 my dad is 7 and my ox only droped to the low 80 my dads droped to 68 the pressure only shows how much air it take to clear the airway not how bad it is closing. Did the doctor clear you for ocassional use when it perscribed?

That's a drag. You should ask the surgeon to discuss with the pulmonologist and see if she will change her mind. Going from CPAP most of the time to CPAP all of the time isn't going to affect the surgery. I know the anesthesiologists want you using it and bringing it to the hospital.

In fact, haven't I heard some people have to discontinue CPAP after surgery for awhile so it doesn't hurt the stomach? Or because of excess gas?

They weren't very specific with instructions- it came from the sleep center and my doctor wasn't so much involved in the process of getting it, but I'm assuming it was to be used every night. I honestly have been using it- more then I thought I would be- but I guess it wasn't enough for them since it wasn't every single night. I know this is my own fault, I'm just disappointed.

Thanks CO. I'm gonna see what happens Tuesday. I'm hoping they will still schedule me for a mid October Surery and all I'll have to do is get the final word from pulmonary in a month (October 12th) at least it was exactly a month- I was afraid it was going to be mid to late October or something. I still have hope- I'll see on Tuesday. Keep fingers crossed for me!

Sounds to me like he is milking more visits, and doesn't want to loose you as a customer.

I didn't have to do a pulmonology consult, but I don't understand what is to be gained by using the CPAP for another month, when weight loss is needed to decrease OSA. It almost seems like she's delaying your recovery from OSA, by making you wait another month. If there's a problem with your airway, the anesthesiologist will be the first one to tell you. Did she say what the expectation is after using the CPAP for another month? What is she measuring to deem it therapeutic to wait another month? I know I ask a lot if questions, but before I fork over more cash, I want to know what goal she's looking to meet in a month?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
