Afraid This May Not Work

Recommended Posts

i am closing in on the final days of my two week pre op liquid diet.

So far I am only down 4 lbs.

I have read so many success stories of people losign 15 or even 20lbs on the pre op.

Now I am terrified that this whole thing will not work for me.

I do not see myself getting anywhere close to the 15lbs loss mark before my surgery.

My doctor didn't say anything about having to lose a certain amount before surgery - but I have heard 10lbs is key for liver reduction.

Clearly I am freaking myself out - but any insight or positive reinforcement would be super helpful.

Surgery is Sept. 19th.

I'm in the middle of my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. Day 7. I've lost 12 pounds so far. I have my surgery on the 20th.

I'm sure I could lose more weight if I were exercising as well. But with being restricted to 800 calories, if I exercise, I will be hungrier.

I'm allowed popsicles, sugar free drinks that are not carbonated and caffeine free, Jello and my Protein shakes. Today has been a problem for me for some reason. I've been hungrier than I have been in the last 7 days. I have just eaten more Jello and had a couple of popsicles and am just drinking as much as I can possibly handle.

You're not going to fail as long as you don't cheat. Some weight loss is better than none. My doctor did not put an amount on the weight loss he wants me to lose. Just follow the liquid diet. One drink at a time. One spoon of Jello at a time. You can do this. You've got 5 days left and on day 6 you have surgery!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!!!

Go get yourself a drink of your choice and think about how your life will be so much better after the sleeve!

You CAN do this! (so can I!!)

Good luck and hang in there!

I only lost 7 lbs on the pre-op diet, and I came through surgery just fine. I am a slow loser... but at lease I'm losing. You will do great! Just be patient with yourself. We all have different genetics and chemistry... it is not possible that we would all do the same - even if we were consuming exactly the same things.

My surgery is scheduled for the 18th and my pre-op diet is really very lenient. shakes for Breakfast and lunch, a Protein Bar for a snack, and a lean an green dinner. I'm assuming the pre op diet isn't about how much you lose pre op, but what you consume (ie. way fewer carbs, starches, and sugas) so the liver will shrink. Don't sweat it and just keep doing what your surgeon has told you to do. You'll do great !!! (and me too !!!) :)

The weight loss is secondary to just doing the liquid diet. My doc made it clear he wanted to shrink my liver to make his job easier. That was the main idea. Although I lost 30 pounds in the 6 months before the surgery, the 2 weeks before was the important part. The scale didn't matter.

The fat came off in the months after. It was not magic, I know, but it seemed like it sometimes. It is not easy but it is effective.

I only lost 5 lbs on my pre-op diet. Yes, there are plenty of people losing faster than me, but you know what? I'm losing :) I figure it really doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as it keeps moving in the right direction. Good luck with your surgery, you will do just fine!

I had the same fear. I am now 5 months out, down 94#. If you follow your dietitian's and doctor's plan..it will work.

I'm sure you'll be fine. I didn't lose much on the pre-op either.

As a tip to anyone that hasn't had their initial weigh in with the doctor- one strategy would be to wear a couple of sets of clothes and make sure you fill you pockets with everything you may need in case a natural disaster strikes during the appointment. There may be a small side effect of your starting weight being artificially higher, but isn't that worth it for safety and peace of mind?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
