Disgusted By Others Eating

Recommended Posts

As a "pre op person" I have no doubt that I will notice the quantity of food people eat after my surgery. I will pray that I feel pity or empathy for them, and not disgust.

The reason I feel disgusted over this is because people don't get help for what is such an obvious problem for some. If you're unhappy, and most fat people are, take steps to change it! Whether it's a diet change, or WLS, you have to do SOMETHING to make changes for the better. I have little sympathy for those who won't take steps to help themselves. Life is too short.

Before being sleeved, I was so busy eating that I didn't notice what others were eating. Now - I'm done in 5 minutes. Partly jealous. Partly bored!!!

But in a way, wasn't this all of us, until we decided to have surgery?

okay Im going to do it.....the rudeness of this topic overwhelms me.....so yes I guess I am being as judgemental as the majority of you on this postt...

Really.... escuse me.... if it were not for the sleeve...most of us would still be licking KFC grease off of our fingers...as at matter of fact...I have a feeling some of you are doing behind close doors...(wait that was accusatory so im sorry).

How dare we look at anyone and make judgement, feel ill or what ever....damn did you not wear those same moccasins.....

all i can say is simply this....stand in the mirror....oh skinny one....point at the figure in the mirror....then notice those 3 fingers pointing right back at you....

God forbid someone talks about the skin that will sag around our bellies....or the thinning of our hair that may take place....

I found that those who frown upon others are still quite miserable themselves.....

Wait a minute is this how we Celebrate the few pounds already lost.....

whew... now I can stop judging yalll (LOL)

So true about being done eating in just a few mins and just sitting and watching ...and waiting for others to finish. I am not proud that I feel a little yucky about how much people eat. Here is the deal- I would never say anything to anyone else about the amount of food they are eating. I know that I would still eat like that if I could. That is why I had the sleeve done. I feel like I can post my thoughts on here because there are others who understand how I feel about it. I doubt any ones thoughts are kind all of the time.

Absolutely! Then we found a way to help ourselves.

I don't pay attention to what others are eating or doing...it's their lives Just as I wouldn't like them watching or commenting on what I'm eating or doing. If someone comments on how little I eat, I tell them that I had WLS... not afraid to tell the truth. Better than dying, I tell them! Then, if they want the details, I tell them about the surgery. The only thing that bothers me about food is the thought of GREASY or SUGARY foods. Makes my skin crawl... YUCK... but I'm not going to stop anyone from eating it around me. My family does eat better now, because I only cook what I can eat! LOL!!! :D

I am now 6.5 weeks out and find I am SO judgemental of what everyone else eats now. I get sick if I see glutinous people and feel ashamed for having looked like that. Funny thin is' date=' I ate alone most of the time so no one would judge me that way and here I am.[/quote']

I guess we need to remember who we were prior to the surgery and what it took for us to become candidates and finally getting the surgery. Those thoughts of disgust and negativity could be us again if we aren't disciplined. So I guess if we know we're really not at the compassionate level of accepting ourselves and others for who they are and not the quantity of Entrees they consume... We may need to refrain from certain places that heighten our non productive critical thoughts. Like an alcoholic staying away from a bar and a gambler staying away from a casino.

Very well said tovanta! Not every person has access to this surgery. I have a good job with great insurance and it did not cover it. I thank God that I was able to come up with 23,000 for it. I'm sure there a lot of people that would love to have the surgery if they had insurance or other means to pay for it.

I find this post to be more rude and more judgemental than any of the previous posts. Being astounded at the volumes others eat is very much a part of this journey. And to share honestly our surprise at these feelings post sleeve does not make us all evil. In fact, I am disgusted at how I used to eat (not that I have eated KFC in well over a decade) so the disgust is just as inwardly focused as outwardly.

And if you read you will see a few of us feel physically I'll watching some others eat. This is not actually within our control. What we can control is how we manage it and I see no one openly telling others they disgust them! Sure, I comment to my husband out of concern for his health and well being, especially since he sees it as his job to eat my left overs these days if I don't stop him but that is hardly the same as managing to control and hide the physical disgust I feel when I watch someone scarf down a cheeseburger without stopping to chew.

Is it my imagination or are alot of people coming down way too hard on the OP?

Personally, I feel nothing but compassion when I see a 300 pounder at a restaurant eating a big meal. I want to slip him my surgeon's number so badly, but I don't. But at work, it's another story. My coworkers are people I know and get along with. And the guys I eat lunch with talk about nothing else but losing weight and getting back in shape. Yet, they typically eat 1000 or more calories at lunch. Keep in mind, we have a very physically demanding job and we work in the heat so a big meal is not the best thing to eat around here.

I know the calories because while they eat and talk about how healthy they are for only bringing a half piece of chocolate cake for dessert, I'm adding up their 4 pieces of fried chicken and 3 cups of rice on MFP just to see what they are eating. I don't share it with them, but I want to know because this is how I used to eat as well. The difference is, I didn't pretend I was eating healthy.

The other day my boss brought a container of oatmeal raisin Cookies to work and called it a "healthy snack". I checked the nutritional information....1 of those healthy Cookies was the same calories and carbs as 4 oreos. Wow, real healthy. These guys are kidding themselves. It's like the Tale of the Walking Wounded around here. Most of them cannot tie their shoes without passing out, and they get a serious injury checking they're email and end up on light duty for 6 weeks. Then spend all day talking about what studs they were in high school. The heck with high school, I'm 43 and I'm gonna run a 10K before I'm 44.

So I guess what I'm saying is, it's not the gluttony that irritates me....it's the denial.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
