I have bsbc federal I believe they are similar if not the same. I received a letter of approval in about a week from the ins coord submitting all paperwork. You should not have a problem. Good luck!

Providing your specific plan does not contain any exclusions or craziness and you meet the fairly simple requirements, it should be easy sailing.

Im hoping that things will go pretty quickly. My BCBS of Texas is provided through HEB so Im hoping for the best. But from what I have heard, I shouldn' have too hard of a time getting approved. *fingers crossed*

Once your doctor submits the paperwork, call BCBS the next day to make sure they have it. Then call them daily and ask if you have been approved. Once you are, it will take at least a week or two from the time they make a decision until they actually mail the "official" approval letter to the doctor.

To speed up the process, you can ask them to fax a copy to the doctor in the meantime so you can move forward with the process while the "official" paperwork is en route. That can save you a couple of weeks of sitting around.

Hello! i have bcbs federal and i had wait three months before my surgery. i had to see a nutritionist once a month for the three months, get pychiatric approval (1 appointment only), and all my lab work. It really went by fast and wasnt too bad.i used the 3 months to do more research on the sleeve. I just had my surgery on Tues, Sept. 11th and was released from hospital yesterday. Am doing pretty good so far. Good luck with your journey to getting the sleeve!

I have BCBS of Texas and was amazed at how smooth and fast the approval process was. My first consult was June 5th, I received approval like June 25th and had surgery July 24th. I hope everything goes just as well for you. Plus everybody I have spoke with at BCBS of TX is super nice :)

Wow that is great! I'm glad to hear you are doing so well! Everyone I have spoken to with BCBS is very nice as well. I'm hoping that everythng will just fly by because i meet all the pre-determination requirements and i am doing the Dietician & Counselor stuff...I am just being impatient! I know I need to wait! lol... Now they did tell me that just this past May they dropped a 6 month waiting period requirement, which will work out well for me since I loose my insurance in April 2013. I turn 26 and will no longer be covered on my parents plan. Keep me posted on your progress!!!

There was no mention of a 3 month wait period for me. He said as soon as I get my apporval we can schedule the surgery. I hope that isn't somthing they are going to wait until the last minute to tell me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
