I'm miserable. 8 days out and severely constipated. I've tried stool softners, Fiber chewables and an enema. Still no relief. I have a call into the dr about having a colonic. Anyone had one after surgery? If so, how far out from surgery when you had it?

I haven't had one after surgery and I probably wouldn't. I came from my 7 week check-up about an hour ago and I was telling my doctor that I'm still having Constipation issues. I tried Miralax and it worked temporarily. She suggested Benefiber as a mainstay because of all of the Protein I have to take in but in the meantime, I've been drinking Smooth Move or just taking 4 Senna pills everyday.

if you can find somewhere to get some kangen Water, you could drink that.. it changes the molecules in the Water & remineralizes it (brings it back to "life" so to speak) and long story short, it has a very easily digestible & easy to assimilate form of magnesium in it.. which magnesium makes you poop.. and because it is water, it will help hydrate you... killing 2 birds with 1 stone. :) actually 3, because it is alkalized, and you want your body to be alkalized.. it helps you heal faster, repair yourself faster & keep bad stuff from growing in you.. if you have an alkalized body, cancer won't grow in it & etc.. so that's definitely worth checking out.. because you're so constipated, i'd start out at the top alkalized number.. you'll blow the bowl out of the toilet for a day or two, but you'll be so thankful to get that junk out of your body! :)

alternately, you could get some magnesium powder.. same sort of effect, without the cool water. lol :) you can buy it at health food stores, like whole foods & akin's or whatever. :)

edit:

you can also pick up some xylitol & use that as a sweetener. it's a natural alternative to sugar & one of the benefits of it is that it's a natural laxative.. it's got all sorts of Vitamins and stuff in it, too.. http://www.livingfuel.com/TheraSweet.aspx << where you can buy some. :)

I would think you would not want a colonic so close to surgery. I have had them since surgery as I have not found a good solution to the ongoing Constipation. Taking magnesium daily will help. Also, milk of magnesia can be helpful. Good luck!

MOM solved my issues. Just keep taking it regularly, even after things start moving.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
