Innocent Question From My Son

Recommended Posts

Yesterday afternoon, as my youngest son - age 7 - was wrapping up his homework, he asks me the following question, out of the blue: "Daddy, did you eat a lot of candy when you were a kid?" I had no idea where this was coming from.

I said, "Oh, I don't know... maybe more than I should have. Why do you ask?"

"Well," he says, "because you're fat."

And he doesn't say it in a mean way. In fact, I took it as quite the opposite. He's trying to make the connection, I guess. There wasn't any more to the conversation beyond that. After the exchange, he went about his business and I mine, but it's something I keep thinking about.

My six year old daughter asked me, in the sweetest way, if I'd ever be able to "run and jump and play games" again. It broke my heart. And steeled my resolve to get healthy.

Wow I understand how kids are and did that hurt your feeling? I ask my kids all the time much older than yours they lie & say no I just laugh because I know the truth.

Howevere that made you feel keep your head up and take it one day at a time.

No, it wasn't like that at all. It was pretty innocent and matter of fact. I wrote more about it on my blog (see my signature).

My kids say things like that too at times and they don't mean to be hurtful. They are just concerned about me and love me. It's a good thing for them to know not to eat too much cotton candy. :-)

My son asked me if my surgery will make me lose weight in my fingers because they are chubby. lol. I think he assumes I'll be skinny when I come home from surgery.

A good friend of mine passed away 2 years ago. I am very close to her 7 yr old. We spend a lot of time together. The other day I told him I was having surgery and he asked why (his mom had many surgeries) When I told him I was not sick and my dr and I thought it would be a good idea if I lose weight. He looked me over from top to bottom and said... "I think they are right" lol

out of the mouths of babes.

HE also asked what I would look like when I came home from the hosp. He thought I would lose it all in the hosp. (i wish)

It didn't hurt my feelings at all. It came from a place of love and, ultimately sadness bc to her, not being able to run and jump and play games is probably one of the saddest things she can think of.

I will have this surgery and I will lose this weight and I will run and jump and play games with my children again very soon. :)

When I got home from surgery, my BF's son said "well, it obviously didn't work, you're still fat." (He's 12, so he could have been confused, or being an a-hole.) I think he thought I had just gone in to get it all sucked out. Oh I wish! LOL
