Hunger Pains Or Not?

Recommended Posts

I am SO relieved to hear I'm not the only one! I've taken to doing two things when my stomach starts griping at me: drink cold Water or if I'm super hungry, Protein Shake. The Protein shake usually knocks the hunger out for a few hours.. the cold water just calms it down for a few minutes, LOL!

I wonder -- would adding Protein powder to EVERYTHING make it more substantial?

I ate 1/2 can tuna for dinner with some mayo about 3 hours ago, with about 3 bites of my kids chicken. Now the hunger monster is back. I'm drinking Water.

I have wondered that. I would think it certainly wouldn't hurt

I am guessing everyone will be different. All I acan do is offer an opinion from my experience. 4 1/2 months post op. I felt this same thing after my surgery after the pain from surgery itself subsided. I was told that my dody will need to adjust in making less stomach acid. I also noticed that over time I had a lot of rumbling from gas and my insides moving as I lost weight. I was fortunate and lost a lot of weight in the 4 months but in the first six weeks I fought what I believed to be hunger pains, but was probably everything healing and adjusting. After the first six weeks I started feeling more normal and had less hunger issues, and now I have none. But like I said everyone will be different. Hang in there and it will take care of itself in time. I became friends with Dryers no sugar added real fruit Popsicles, and still eat them to this day. I have currently lost 90 lbs in 4 1/2 months, but I am a guy and I guess we loose weight a lot easier.

Are you drinking before & after you eat? That will make your sleeve empty faster. The rule of thumb seems to be no drinking 30 minutes before you eat and 30-60 (varies by doctor) after.

Thanks, Zino, good information that helps me feel more hopeful. And good point Doxieville about the no drinking reminder. I don't have to start that for 2 more days and maybe that will help some.

Perfectly normal. Your stomach is healing but you haven't eaten anything.....plus you don't realize how much of it is head hunger' date=' but you can bet some of it is. I was craving food so bad my second week, I was licking wheat thins. Once you start eating solid foods this will be a distant memory.[/quote']

Lol! I'm 7 days out and want real food so bad!! I think I might go get some Wheat Thins! Thanks for the giggle ;)

For what it's worth, for the past 2 days I've been ONLY eating Protein. Deli turkey, cottage cheese, eggs, shredded chicken, Protein shakes.... and my hunger pangs have all but disappeared.

Mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, pudding... mushy and delicious but not worth it.

I am 3 days post-op and fighting serious hunger pains/acid or whatever you call it. Then I have the nerve to sit and watch cooking shows. LOL. My doctor did not tell me anything about Protein shakes just straight liquids (Water, broth, SF Jello, SF popsicles..) For some reason this is not holding. I just want the hunger pains or constant thought of food to stop. Would love to try cream of wheat/pudding/mashed potatoes/anything that will stick.

Lol that is so funny. That is all I did for the first six weeks is watch cooking shows and eating shows, then cook supper for the family every night. And I am talking about good stuff. All stuff I couldn't eat because I was on liquids. Good to see I wasn't the only one but food shows are the only interesting thing on during the middle of the day.

OK, I just have to share this with everyone. I am 8 days post op. Yesterday was the 1st day I was able to have real food-deli turkey with W.W. cream cheese spread&green chiles(I rinsed the seeds off) and you fry it in Pam. Got the recipe off of Eggface's site. Yum! Anyway, I LOVE my sleeve because I could not finish 2 slices of turkey!! And it happened again today! I was so hungry for my 2oz of salmon mixed with mayo& wanted to just keep eating.....but I couldn't! Yippee! What a dream, huh?!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
