Finally Sleeved With A Different Post Op Story.

Recommended Posts

Well finally was sleeved the 5th of September and woke up in the ICU. This was planned ahead because of being a cardiac patient. So I figured so far so good and was sucking down the ice chips , just felt so dry. Then the nausea started to kick in and they were giving me a injection every 4hrs. Didn't work so up it came and boy did it. It was pure blood and a lot, more than the pouch could hold but it felt like it was sitting in my chest so it probably backed up my throat. Ahh Doc, is this right? Says not to worry and after a couple hours do it again and few hours later again but now the color is more a brown like old blood. Each time the amount was less and less until after the 5th time then they switched the nausea med to Phenergan Inj which can only be giving every 6hours, that is why they were using the other at every 4 hours.

Did I mention I was given hyparin injections every so often as a blood thinner. Basically the surgery went excellent and thanks to a 3 week strict pre-op diet the liver had little or no fat and was shiny. Yay for that guess all those beer kegs didn't do that much damage after all. But here was the kicker, the pouch sealed tight with no leaks and your stomach takes time to wake up to release to your intestinal tract. So where does all the blood go? Yup, 2 day of throwing up because of thinners and wrong nausea meds.

So 3rd day Doc comes in and says get down some puree meat and carrots and you are released. Huh? What happened to the Clear liquids, then the 2 weeks of liquids we were taught? Said I did so well in surgery feels I should go to puree now. I guess they are still figuring it all out since every Doc is different for certain steps, food, etc.

I was on puréed before leaving the hospital too. I have noticed with those who left on puréed do not have the same issues with hair loss further down the track. I think that this is because the body is less in shock. So if the surgeon thinks you can have puréed, then I recommend it for sure. I am 15 weeks post op today, lost over 70 pounds, and feeling fantastic.

Follow your surgeon, your NUT, and most importantly listen to your body.

Every doctor certainly is different, I was on liquids only for 1 week post op, then mushies for 6 weeks. My dr also recommends refraining from drinking 30 minutes before eating and 60 minutes afterwards. I usually just see the 30/30 recommendation.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
