How Many Days After Surgery Before You Had A Bm?

Recommended Posts

Feeling a little embarassed to ask, but I didn't think to ask my doctor before I left the hospital and I have not gone since Tuesday so I am just curious. I realize I've barely eaten anything so this could just be part of the process, but it seems very strange to me also. I can't call my doctor until tomorrow so just curious what everyone elses experiences have been.

Great topic! I am in the same boat! I had my surgery Monday and still haven't gone. My doctor says it can be over a week but that kind of freaks me out a little. I am right this moment, sipping on some Smooth Move tea (that's what's it's called, lol) to hopefully get something moving.

I was sleeved on 8/29 and didn't have one til 9/5. I was put on colace as a stool softener and it really helped because of all the pain meds...

I had this problem too post-op and in fact continue to if I do not stay on top of it. Do talk with your surgeon and do not let yourself get impacted.... It is too uncomfortable and can be dangerous! People mistakenly think since they r on liquids they shouldn't have bms but you will still make stool .. It is the waste from all your intake. Protein Shakes can be very constipating for some and the lack of Fiber slows down all digestion in the beginning. My doc suggested Senna tablets till I am eating more. It helps!!!

Glad to know I'm not the only one! It isn't my normal topic of conversation, but it is funny how every thought seems to revolve around this surgery at first. I have done so much reading and research since Tuesday it's unbelievable.

I have never gone this long before so it just feels unnatural. I may try to see if I can't get some fiber in today. I am having a terrible time getting in my liquids so I know that isn't helping. Really worrying about getting dehyrdated at this point. I've only been able to get in about 32oz of Fluid since surgery so I'm going to work extra hard on reaching goal today. Maybe that will help. I do not want a bad 1st experience when I do go. ;)

Use stool softener! It will be very painful otherwise.

I can go 10-15 days unless I am on top of things with fiber supplements, Mirilax, Colase, Milk of magnesia (blech) when needed. My husband and I joke about when it is "poop day" lol - he has the same issues after his own vsg as well.

I had this same discussion with my doctor. He said that I will not have movements once a day as I used to do and that it would usually take several days between movements. I am making sure I have at least the amount of fluids I am supposed to have and drinking Smooth Move tea, which tastes just fine. He said Smooth Move is good for the short term but that for a longer term solution to use Benefiber or one of its clones. I've been unable to find Benefiber but my CVS pharmacist was able to direct me to a clone CVS puts out. I'm sure other pharmacies have their own clones, too.

Ask your doc if you can take Miralax. Makes you go without hurting!

My doctor wouldn't let me out of the hospital until i did. It was about a day and a half, maybe 2 days?

Wow, I had my surgery on Tuesday and haven't even had an urge. I go back for follow up this Tuesday so I'll definitely find out what I need to do.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
