Dr. Kelly's Patients Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

I started my pre-op diet today since I was able to move up my surgery date from December to October 6th. I'm starting a little early becaue I'm hoping to lose 15 lbs to get my BMI under 50 and save $500.

I notice most other patients were able to have Protein drinks but on the Pre-Op diet sheet I received from Omar, I didn't see them listed. I emailed him just now but was hoping to get some feedback from you all in case he doesn't get back to me before tomorrow.

Thank you!

My surgeon, Dr. Kim, requires 2 weeks of liquid diet. The Protein shakes must be Meal Replacement. I am using GNC Lean shake 25. Dr. Kim has me on an 800 calorie diet. I am allowed to have sugar-free popsicles, Chrystal Light, Jello, one serving of low fat-low sodium chicken broth a day. All that goes in my mouth must be sugar-free.

I'm finishing day 3 tonight. I lost 7 lbs. Mostly Water weight, I'm sure.

Good luck!

I got sleeved by Dr. Kelly 3 weeks ago and Omar said I was allowed to have 1 Protein Shake a day on my pre-op diet (even though it didn't say it on the diet paperwork). Good luck with your surgery!

I thought the pre-diet was similar to the post-op but I have heard that you receive the post-op stuff before you leave. I'm gonna email Omar and ask for it. I have also heard that it's kind of vague. I found the pre-diet kind of vague and confusing too.

Thanks CCC. It was vague. I have been googling other diets for some guidance. LMK what you find out.

I did my pre-op diet with Dr Kelly from the 1st week in May to May 25th. My BMI was over 50, so I was on the mushies. Mashed cauliflower, mashed potatoes, chicken broth, sugar free Jello, low sodium V8, apple juice, sugar free pudding, cinnamon applesauce, basically any veggie or fruit pureed without added fat or sugar. I lost from 310 to 285 3 weeks on the mushies. The last 3 days was only Clear Liquids though.

I too have a BMI of over 50...how long were you on the diet? My surgery is 10/6 and I need to lose 14 lbs. So far I've lost 2 lbs and I'm having short term memory loss (forgetting that I got gas, purchased things etc) and after a trip to the doc, she said it was diet. Did you have any problems?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
