I was told no soda ever again! I have heard several reasons why! I was told it can stretch the new tummy out, plus adds gas to your stomach, but worst is that I heard it can make you feel hungry and cause cravings that we just don't need!

I, too, was told no soda (or any carbonated beverage) ever again. Not a big deal for me, since most diet sodas are sweetened with aspartame, and I'm unable to eat/drink anything with that nasty chemical in it. (It gives me wicked bad migraines.) I do miss Jones' diet cherry soda (sweetened with splenda), but not bad enough to risk the issues outlined by my surgeon (see AKSleever's response...I got the same information). Develop a taste for something else....I love 4C flavor packets in bottled Water, and enjoy both Decaf hot tea, and coffee, much more than before surgery.

I was told no soda, but I tried it anyway. I have no issues with it as far as pain, unless I chug it. But...I am now trying to give it up again. It's added calories, and it did stretch my tummy. Of course, not by much - I still cant eat the way I did Pre-Op, but I know the carbonation doesnt help. So...my answer : Yes, you will be able to have soda again, as long as you can really limit yourself and not let it get the best of you!

I recently realized that it wasn't the soda I liked but the ice. So I bought a fountain drink with soft Sonic ice and barely added any soda (just for flavor) and I chew on it all afternoon. Weird, I know.

You can buy bagged ice at Sonic - worth a try.

Not weird at all...I do the same thing! The weird thing is that I can't do Diet Coke anymore (even though I was a junkie pre sleeve) I had to have the soft ice and Pepsi...I let it sit for a few minutes in the soft ice and it seems to become less "fizzy" then all I need is a couple of small sips and i'm good. I even went out and bought a Ninja and a bag of ice so I could make it at home...works GREAT!! The ice comes out like snow (works great with Crystal Light too...just like a snow cone!) I only do this whenever the craving comes up )which is not very often at all, maybe once every couple of weeks) it's refreshing and gets me over some bad need a little sugar times.

I've had the occasional soda, it's my only source of caffeine and working 3rd shift with 2 small kids, sometimes caffeine is necessary. I haven't noticed any changes other than increased gas, and increased acid. I'm still losing, still have the same restriction etc... I usually do diet only because too much sugar now makes me feel weird. I don't chug it by any means, ex. a 20 oz bottle will last me far beyond my 10 hour work shift.

I was told no soda and mainly due to that fact that it can easily burn a whole in the stomach since post op it has less protective lining. Scared me off soda and I'm still pre op!

I am still pre op as well, but I'm already winging myself off soda because this surgery is too much to go through only to have your new stomach enlarged again. Not worth it to me.

I have a little diet soda now and then I can not drink more then a couple of swallows and I really don't sem to care for it like I did pre op.

I still love my diet coke and my doctor knows I have some on occasion. He's fine with it as long as I don't overdo it - of all the vices one can have, he sees this as the least offensive (since I could be smoking or drinking alcohol instead).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
