OK I need help-I finally Quit.

Recommended Posts

I have finally quit smoking. I have quit many times before but this is going to be the last time. I had my last cigarette on Saturday night and am doing OK. I haven't physically hurt anyone, been a bit crabby but not too bad. I really haven't been too bad with the food. Started walking more so I wouldn't eat. WHY HAVE I GAINED 5 Pounds??? Could my metabolism be slowing down without the nicotine? I am a bit constipated but not 5 pounds worth. I know in my head why it is good to quit and that 5 pounds is nothing but I am scared that it will turn into 80 and I will be back where I started. I have very little restriction and cannot get a fill for a while ( another story) Any ideas? I need this to be the last time, I really don't want to die from cigarettes but there has to be something... Friends say it will even out but no one can say when...

You have taken the most important step you could POSSIBLY take to improve your health, Seppi. Congratulations!! No question the first few weeks are the hardest, but I promise the day will come when you can't believe you ever were so cruel to yourself as to smoke. Good job and keep it up!!

Seppi, you're doing GREAT!! The first 3 days are the worst, and those are behind you. With the band, you're not going to have 5 lbs turn into 80 lbs -- no way. I'm certain the 5 lbs isn't real anyway.

Maybe you can log your food for a few weeks while you get over the hump? It'll keep your weight stable (or better) and will give you something else to do. Check out sparkpeople.com for a good place to keep your food log.

Best of luck. You're doing wonderfully!

Congrats! You have taken the hardest step just deciding to quit in the first place. I had my 1 yr smoke free anniversary at the end oif July and I will not lie to you and say there haven't been times that I really wanted a cigarette- generally at times of great stress but the first few weeks were so not fun that i do not want to repeat them. Hang in there! You can do it! Now the smell makes me ill - and my DH and DD still smokes but not in the house or car.

Thanks everyone. I was ready to throw in the towel and give up, I cannot stand to gain anymore weight but I made it past that. I think I might float away, I am trying to drink Water everytime I want to smoke. So far so good.

I'm with NorthernSun. I quit almost three years ago and the smell of cigarette smoke makes me want to :)

Something that you can do that is kinda disgusting but works is to fill a coffee can with cigarette butts, put Water on them and close it with the lid. Then everytime you want one take a big WHIFF.

Congrats and keep your chin up.

Seppi, I quit 15 yrs ago. My mom was dying and the only thing that she asked me to do was to quit smoking. I did it cold turkey that day. She didn't get to see me at a normal weight but at least I was able to give her that. I did gain but I didn't have the band either. This will be the best thing other than the band that you can do for yourself. You'll get through it ok. You might gain a couple of pounds, thats ok, for you know that it will come off again not like before. Just think, you are doing two great things for yourself. You are going to be one healthy lady!!!!

Keep up the great work. Just have faith in yourself and the band!

Diane

Hi Seppi,

I quit last year 2 years after banding and losing 90% of my weight. I am still cigarette free, but I did gain weight as a result (13 pounds). So stay on top of it and dont let a few pounds turn to a dozen and you will do just fine. I sometimes can hardly believe that I ever smoked even though I did for 24 years.

Seppi,

I am too wanting to quit so bad, but am afraid of the weight gain. I was going to do it this week but talked myself out of it because of my lack of restriction right now. I am scheduled for a fill on Oct. 2nd, I think I will make that my quit day, therefor, I will be on liquids so I can't overeat. I am going to use the patch. I've heard that even if you don't overeat you will gain some because the nicitone in your system makes you burn more calories at night while sleeping, and if you quit you won't burn that much at night unless you take a brisk 20min walk before going to bed to release some enzyme into your body. Not sure if this is true but I know smoking does release alot of stuff in your body (mostly NOT GOOD). Anyway you are doing great and keep up the good work......

I cold turkeyed in 1980 at one pack a day. Two things really helped -- I never told myself that today I'm quitting -- the anxiety would get too high to manage. Instead, on that fateful day...I never had the first one of the day.

The other thing that helped was something I heard or made up...the strong urge/craving to smoke only lasts 4 minutes at a time. If you can hang on for 4 min. the urge will pass. For the first couple of days those 4 min. urges seemed to come right on top of each other, but I just asked myself to hang on for 4 min. They began coming farther apart and soon after, I knew I had made it.

Best wishes on quitting! :clap2:

Four minutes... I can do that. Today was especially hard but I made it. Thanks everyone for the help. I have started using fit day, found I was eating a little more than I thought. That would explain the gain. I think I am snacking instead of smoking.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
