Day 3 Post Op: My Nurses Got Me In Trouble!

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately, due to a reaction I had to my anesthesia, I am still in the hospital, but aside from that I think everything is going well. My doctor did come in to check on me this morning and was asking me what all I kept down yesterday (liquid diet) and as I was telling him I saw his eyes get wide bc someone had given me apple juice. It says I can have fat free apple juice, but this was no sugar added and I drank two of them yesterday (4 oz each). I had no idea bc the nurses were bringing it so I thought they probably knew what they were giving me. Oops! I know now and won't do that again, but he was afraid of my body dumping bc of it although that didn't happen.

Anyways, hope everyone else's surgeries and few days post op are going smoothly! I will hopefully overcome this postoperative myalgia soon and get to go home and see my puppy dogs. I'd love to hear how things are for everyone else. I am interested to get on a scale, but haven't had the chance yet.

Best,

Rach

I did not drink any juices pre-op. Just not my thing. However, post-op the best thing I had was apple juice mixed with cranberry. My Dr. never said I couldn't have it. especially since that was the only thing I was keeping down. To him, and me, the most important thing was being hydrated. Sugar counting could wait. I hope you have a smooth recovery.

I am not drinking any juices on pre op as well. but I am allowed to have apple and cranberry juice if I want. but after the surgery ( tomorrow ) I decided that If juice would be the liquid which would go down without the problem I would have it ( apple or cranberry ) because I need to worry about dehydration. and I would worry about sugar there later on. If I could drink Water fine then I probably don't need to have juice. will see.

Apple and cranberry were both on my allowed clear liquid days. They both tasted like crap mind you lol but they were allowed.

I told the doc yesterday I would prefer grape juice which he said was ok watered down, but I can't being myself to Water down wine :P

I am allowed juice post op as long as it's no sugar added. The first couple of weeks they wanted me to dilute it with Water, but I can drink it undiluted now. Though there are exceptions to any rule - the sleeve generally does not have dumping like RNY. Dumping is caused by the rearrangement of your intestines and the fact that RNYers don't have a pyloric sphincter at the end of their pouch. They have a stoma, so there is not a controlled release of sugar when it moves through the system, which causes their pancreas to release a bunch of insulin, causing low blood sugar type symptoms, and therefore, dumping syndrome. At least that's how I understood it and why sleevers don't have dumping when my surgeon explained it to me.

How jealous! My sleeve can't stand juice! I got apple juice at the hospital and all I could stand was a sip and then I felt sick...it's Water for me!

Apple juice is fat free just has natural occuring sugar unless you had ones that add sugar. This could cause you to get sick

I still dilute my juice by have when I do drink juice. Apple juice actually calmed my stomach during my first week home.

I think he has you confused with a gastric bypass patient.

I was given apple juice as soon as I was started on liquids. It was delivered every day with my tea and crystal lite drink. It only tasted good to me if it was poured over ice.

RNY patients have dumping syndrome due to a mechanical nature (rerouting of intestines), but anyone, sleeved patient or otherwise, can have dumping syndrome of a chemical nature (type of food eaten). If you stay away from too many high sugar foods/drinks or foods with high amounts of sugar alcohols (sugar free candy), it'll probably never happen.

Yeah, he said it isn't common for dumping with the sleeve, but says it does happen occasionally. Also, he said he doesn't want me taking in all of that sugar bc it can interfere with weightloss. I have actually not had trouble keeping anything down other than my pain meds which always make me nauseous, even pre-surgery. I have already been cleared for puréed foods today and have had a lowfat potatoe/veggie Soup (2g sugar per 1 cup) and I had only 4 oz, 2 oz cottage cheese and I've been trying to sip Water and skim milk. I have actually had very little all together, but feel very satisfied which is an amazing feeling all together! My main problem is getting on all of my Water so I'm trying to focus on that for now.

Keep the comments coming. I love hearing about everyone else. Makes me feel like I'm not doing this alone. Of course, my husband has been by my side every step of the way, but it is cool to have people who are actually experiencing this exact thing. :)

Apple juice is naturally fat free. There is no such thing as fatty apple juice. Confused at that statement

I meant sugar free, not fat free...

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
