Memory Loss, Chewing Gum, Olives & Pickled Okra... >.>

Recommended Posts

I was reading on here & have read/seen elsewhere that there can/may be some memory loss... is it something that will last? will it worsen as you age?.. or is it something that's usually just post-surgery?.. i want to go to med school or join the military (or both), so i need my brains intact. lol :) alzheimer's does run in the family on my mom's side, though.. grandpa & great grandpa had it, as well as great grandma. would memory loss have a greater affect on me or greater risk because of the potential genetic factor?

also.. another thing i've been thinking about, since i enjoy chewing gum.... what happens (with regards to your stomach/digestion) if/when you accidentally swallow a piece of chewing gum?

oh.. can you eat things like canned asparagus, green Beans, peas, olives and the like on soft foods? (of course you'd chew really well)... just asking, because i don't know what qualifies as "soft".. :)

and...... when can you start eating stuff like pickled okra?

thank you for your time. :)

Hi Nyxa,

I experienced some memory problems. Examining my diet I saw that I was low on folate. I added a supplement of folic acid and now my memory seems to be about the same as it was before I got the sleeve.

Gum.. well I see most people say that gum is verboten. I don't ever swallow gum and I chew it from time to time. It *should* go through since we have a normal small stomach but I'd now want to risk it if I were someone that swallowed gum.

Okra... I had some this weekend. Your mileage may vary but I could eat pickled veggies at about 2 or 3 months out but only a couple of bites.

WOW!! That's a lot of stuff to cover. I was on 21 meds when I had my surgery and now I am on none. So as far as the memory, mine is much better. I don't know how it is affecting others. My doc did not say not to chew gum, so I suppose he doesn't think it is a biggie. On my soft food diet, I could have veggies cooked to mush. I was told not to eat pickled anything for several months. Does that cover it all? :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
