Time to Recover

Recommended Posts

How'd you all feel five days post-op? If I get banded, it would have to be on November 1. I would be due on rotation by November 6. Is five days enough time to recover do you think? My surgeon says it wouldn't be a problem. On rotation I would have to stand a lot and have good cognitive function. Thanks for your input!

What type of rotation are you talking about?

Honestly, I think each person recovers differently. I have seen many posters that were up and around in no time. Unfortunately, I was not one of them. It was a full week before I felt like getting around much at all. It was a full 2 1/2 to 3 weeks before I felt like my old self again.

Have you had any type of surgery before? If yes, how quickly did you recover? That may be an indicator of how you do with your lapband surgery. I have always been one to recover slowly from surgery.

I think my biggest problem at 5 days out from surgery was the amount of gas in my stomach....I looked 9 months pregnant!

Apart from that I felt OK though.

Depends on the type of work you do, if its physically demanding, I would give it atleast two weeks.

If its a cushy deskjob then you should be fine after 5 or so days, just don't push yourself too hard.

D'oh...I had mentioned in another post that I'm a pharmacy student and forgot to mention it here. My first rotation starts November 6, and it will be in a community pharmacy...which means plenty of standing. I contacted my preceptor about the possibility of sitting during the first week, and she said that we could "work something out". My problem is that if something were to happen and I couldn't do my rotations, I'd be a year behind in graduating...and I'd have to start paying on my $150,000 in student loans until I could get back to rotations. I know it's risky when I only have a five-day window, but part of me just wants to get it done and get to losing. My next opportunity wouldn't be until next summer!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
