Recommended Posts

But she did say that anything before the phsy appointment was not covered, and since I have not yet started can someone tell me what all you have to do before that ?? So I can know what to expect ? Thank you !

This is what I've had to do (but in no particular order...just the order I did them)

  • Physical and Pap Smear from PCP with clearance for surgery (you may need a mammogram if over a certain age and I think it's dependent on your insurance and doctor)
  • Lab work drawn
  • Seminar with the surgeon
  • Nutrition Consult
  • Psych Evaluation
  • First appointment with surgeon
  • Endoscopy
  • Final PreOP appt

It took a lot of coordinating and nagging on my part to make sure everything was sent to the surgeon's office in a timely fashion. You'll have to pay for all appointments if they require a co-pay but I'm not sure what they mean by everything after the Psych...you might want to call them back and see if there's a certain order you have to go in.

Did you mean everything before the surgeon's appt.?

The order of my preparation was as follows:

--Seminar conducted by the surgeon for people thinking about weight loss surgery. This was free.

--Appointment with surgeon. Covered by insurance with co-pay.

--My doctor did require $495 after the first visit with him. This was to cover the binder full of information they provided me and various other administrative expenses. The $495 was out of pocket.

--Blood tests and x-rays. These were covered by insurance with a co-pay.

--Barium test in which a doctor looked at my digestive system. This was covered by insurance with a co-pay.

--Appointment with therapist for go-ahead on surgery. This was covered by insurance with a co-pay.

--Appointments with primary care physician for diet and exercise guidance. This was covered by insurance with a co-pay.

--Appointment with surgeon. Covered by insurance with co-pay.

--Surgery. Covered by insurance.

--Follow-up bloodword and visits with surgeon. Covered by insurance with co-pay.

I obviously do not know what your insurance will cover and to what extent, but you can see the preparation for the surgery began with a visit with the doctor. Everything else flowed from that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
