In my case, only until I can get it from food. My doctor didn't say either or but my requirements are 60-80g/day. If I can get that through food (which I am), why would I continue with the shakes?

My program recommends getting off Protein Drinks ASAP, but I plan on drinking them forever.

To me, it doesn't really matter what your doctor or program says. If you can get enough Protein in for your caloric, workout and body-type needs via regular food, don't use shakes. If you can't, use Protein Shakes. Gotta count the calories either way.

If you can tolerate them well, there is no reason not to have 1or 2 a day indefinately. But After a couple/few months they shouldn't be your sole or even your primary source of Protein, that should be food.< /p>

my plan uses them through day 90 (3 months) and I can not see getting in enough protien with out them. I only need one a day with 30grams of protien so that is all I use but how would you get the 80-100 suggested grams 6+ months out without one?

I've heard of many people sticking with shakes forever, if thats what they like to do instead of a meal...Like others mentioned, I dont think you'd wanna use' em as the sole source of Protein ( unless you're still doing liquids and shakes early on, post-op ). It kinda depends on the shake, too...Using high carb, or high sugar shakes for meals or Snacks can end up being a bunch of liquid calories you might not want or need, but people who work out a lot, or do heavy duty exercise might need those extra calories, although its prob better to drink a lower-carb, high Protein Shakes post-op since post-sleevers say they dont tolerate sugary stuff too well....

I still have one for Breakfast every morning during the week. Easy, nutritious and yummy.

WhoozisAnyway - you say "yummy". Which shakes are you using? The ones I've had are merely tolerable.

My nut prefers that you get your Protein naturally from food. That said, for some that's a challenge so they are a good backup.

I'm lactose intolerant, so I use SpiruTein brand mixed with soy milk and sugar free Torani Syrup. Currently I'm using a Cookies and cream SpiruTein with a splash of SF caramel. vitacost has the best prices on SpiruTein that I've found.

I think it depends on your doctor. If I am getting my Protein in I don't have to drink the shakes. However, it is often just too much trouble for me to prepare high-protein foods, so the Protein shake is a no-brainer meal for me until dinner.

For me it is a lack of appetite for real food, and a bit of laziness.

When I was traveling, I knew I couldn't count on getting my Protein on the plane and in airports so I felt it necessary to take my shakes.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
