Hello Fellow Sleepers,

Quick question, can we have hard candy? I was sleeved last Thursday, 8/30. I just want some flavor. I have some Jolly Ranchers left over from the clear liquid diet, pre op. Dr office is closed today, so I thought that I just throw the question out. Thanks for responding. Continued success!

I asked ( thought the same thing--they are clear) and was told no. They want my carbs kept really low & to stay hydrated with fluids.

I was told that we could suck on a piece of sugar free candy but just one piece. Don' overdue it because that can cause dumping also. Also I was told that Listerine strips are awesome for dry mouth. Just put a strip on your tongue and let it dissolve.

Jolly rancher is way to much sugar for a new sleeve. Also if you happen to swallow it the candy would be sharp on your staple line.

How about some sugar free Popsicles?

I only have sugar-free hard candy...very careful about carb intake. Werther's sugar-free caramels are very tasty.

Ok, thanks for your responses. I got my popsicles, and I'm satisfied. This is the true test. I am ready to eat food again, ready to live my new life.

Should be sugar free but it will take your staple line at least 12 weeks to heal. If you were to swallow by accident, you may cause trouble. I am almost 9 months out and have never had ny hard candy since my sleeve.

FYI - there is no dumping syndrome with the sleeve.

FYI - there is no dumping syndrome with the sleeve.

Although, there is no dumping of a mechanical nature, the sugar alcohols used in some sugar free candies causes dumping due to the chemical nature of the ingredients. If anyone has eaten more than a few pieces, they would have a story to tell.

Well, I have gone through too much to get to this point. I am not going to jeopardize my health or success over a Jolly Rancher. I have moved pass that phase, and working on making the right choices. I had my moment, I have gotten back on track now. Thanks for your input everyone, I really appreciate all of the posts.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
