Hey forum! I am new to WLS process and when i first started researching i was adamant on having the lapband put in and nothing else was an option. The more research i did and after the seminar i realized rhat i eould rather go with a sleeve. I am 6'5'' amd 405. Big Boy! From Queens, NY and thinking about having the surgery at NYU. My insurance is CIGNA and i only have to do 3 months of supervised diet which is good comparing to other ins. Companies.

I have switched from LapBand Talk to this forum and have been reading a lot of posts ans it seems to me that sleevers have it easier than bandsters.

I am really turned off by waiting to find the right fill and finding the "green zone" with the band i really want results fast. Also the follow up with the band seem bothersome so i am now 75% leaning towards a sleeve.

I would appreciate some words of encourangement and some suggestions on why this and not that. What was your deciding factor? Anyone else had theirs dine at NYU? Thank you in advance.

Go over to the band to revision forum and read about everyone's nightmares with having the band. If that won't convince you ...

Sleeve has been awesome for me. Can't see how it couldn't do everything you needed it to do.

I too was adamantly for the band only. I did not want to do anything "too drastic". After much research, and attending the information sessions by my surgeon, I decided that I did not want to have a foreign device permanently in my body with the possiblilty of slippage and errosion. I also decided that returning for fills and unfills seemed too high maintenance for me. The final deciding factor for me was the overall success rate of people reaching their goal weight. It was much higher with both VSG and bypass than with the band. I have no regrets in doing VSG. It was not easy in the beginning (not that I expected it to be) but did not take long to feel like myself again and I have been very happy with my weight loss so far. I have no doubt that I will get to my goal. After reading the posts by previous folks with the lap band, I am really happy I decided to go with the sleeve.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
