Ensure Protein Shakes...

Recommended Posts

Are they really that bad? The labeling looks pretty good other than the carbs(20net, 5 sugars), gluten free. I add a scoop of unflavored Protein and it's 51grams of protein. Am i screwing up with these?

The reasoning is that the more you eat in carbs, the less your body relies on consuming its own fat stores for energy. Look up ketosis for a longer explanation. My post-op plan is Clear Liquids first week then onto full with no more than 20 carbs per day and 60-80 grams of Protein.< /p>

I am on a 4 week liquid diet of glucerna (pre op), which is the diabetic version of ensure. Although I'm not diabetic, my doc wants me on a low suga r Meal Replacement. After doing my research I realized that the boost diabetic is much higher in protein (16gm vs 9-11gms), Lower in carbs (16gms vs. 27) and Lower in sugar as well as calories (190 vs 225). I'm allowed 4 a day along with Water and low sodium broth. This will give me 60gms protein and 800-1000 calories /day on my pre-op. they taste great! Can't even tell they are low sugar :-)

I'm not familiar with ensure Protein Drinks. But you should be aware hat the body cannot use 51g of Protein in one sitting. It's closer to 1/2 that number.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
