Frustration With Protien

Recommended Posts

So today I start my Proteins shakes, and it's the drink and shake wait an hour then get 16 oz in 2 hours and then back to another shake. My belly doesn't fit that much in that quick. Im still getting bad gas when I drink and discomfort. Any ideas on how to make it better? I had to walk the entire time I was drinking my shake to get it to go down!

I am not sure how far out you are, but after surgery, it is really difficult to get them down. I remember it taking me all morning to get one down, and that was usually just 8oz. It will come, so try not to worry too much right now, you can work on getting all your Protein in when you have healed a little more. In the beginning it is just as if not more important just to get your fluids in and stay hydrated.

Are you mixing your shakes with milk?? It is common to become lactose intolerant after surgery which might be the reason for the gas and bloating feeling. Try mixing with Water or another type of "milk" (almond, soy) and see if that helps. Also, are you drinking with a straw?? Apparently drinking with a straw you can swallow more air. I never had problems, but I did read in my post-op guideline not to.

The beginning is hard for everyone. Just give it your best and as long as you are drinking Water through out the day, you should be ok. Just keep sipping. As time goes by you will slowly slowly be able to drink with more ease.

I can't drink the Protein shakes with milk any more. It took me about 2 weeks to be able to drink a protien drink in under 3 hours. I started drinking 2 ounces, putting it back in the fridge, coming back 30 minutes later and drinking more until it was all gone.

I have developed a distaste for them. I started drinking the Isopure zero carb Protein Shakes from GNC. I can drink plain milk, but the taste of the Protein is intolerable. I also can not drink plain Water. It actually turns my stomach and causes pain. I talked to the surgeon and he suggested mixing up the Protein drinks with more variety including ice cubes in the blender, Peanut Butter or a bit of a bananna. He gave me a list of about 50 variations to try and suggested citrus or cukes in the Water to change the make up enough.

I am 32 days out from surgery now and have found that if I don't drink the protein I don't lose. I haven't lost a pound in 3 weeks because I wasn't getting enought calories. I also started using a straw eventhough it is not suggested because if helps.

You can add some sugar free pudding mix to the shakes to add different flavor to the Protein Shakes. Only a little at a time though, as it will make it too thick, if you add to much. Gives you a variety... Always put in the blender with ice, it helps big time & mixes the Protein better.Good luck

P.S. I use lactose free milk now...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
