Can't "stomach" protein drinks any longer

Recommended Posts

I'm 5 days post-op, nearing the end the Clear liquids week (juices, Jello, popsicles, broth) and looking forward to week 2 when thicker liquids (soups) can be added. I have reached the point where I simply cannot consume another Protein Drink. I've tried Slimfast, Ensure, Atkins Advantage, vanilla and strawberry flavors. I cannot bring the cup, the can or even a straw to my lips without the gap reflex kicking in. I know I need the Protein, but the taste and consistency is appalling. I realize I'm supposed to have one of these for Breakfast from now on, but I doubt that's gonna happen.

Any shared experiences out there? Any suggestions, advice, counsel or ass-kicking is appreciated of course.

BTW: I bought a Magic Bullet (on eBay pretty cheap), so maybe I can make my own smoothies and somehow derive enough protein that way.

I have tried them all and in my opinion Unjury is the best. It is made for bariatric patients. The consisteny is much smoother and thinner than any of those you mentioned and Unjury doesn't smell or taste very bad. I am very, very picky and this is the only kind I can drink.

It's so thin, I can drink in a hurry and not have that thick, yucky aftertaste.

My recommendation is unflavored Protein you mix in whatever you want. I have used beneprotein and unjury. Both are very good, pretty much the same. These are fat free, carb free Protein sources. I mix them with crystal light and cant tell the difference. I also put them in SF pudding, mix them with juice, etc.

Good luck.

Skim Milk with Carnation Instant Breakfast and a couple of teaspoons of Hershey's chocolate powder if you like a chocolater? tasting drink.

1 cup skim milk has 8 - 9 gm Protein

1 serving carnation instant breakfast has 5 gm Protein.< /p>

Some folks use the Lo Carb Hood Dairy product to decrease the carbs.

Carnation Instant Breakfast also has a lo carb product.

But since you are only five days post op you really shouldn't worry about calories at this point.

Healing and adequate hydration and nutrition are most important.

The only one I can stomach is Hank's Finest Protein. It's expensive but worth it IMHO. I mix it with Water and it tastes like Nestle Quik to me.

If you go to this link you can get two free samples - http://www.healthfitnesschannel.com/FreeProteinSample.htm.

Just be ready to be bombarded with emails from him. On the bottom of his email's you can opt-out of the spam.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
