Where'd my port go?

Recommended Posts

I used to be able to feel my port while standing up. It felt like a little button. If I layed down I could really feel it. I hadn't given it any thought in the last few months but I waslaying on my back this weekend and realized - I can't feel my port anywhere. I have no idea where it has wandered off to.

Did your port go wandering?

That is strange. I thought they said as you lose weight, you would become more aware of your port and it would stick out more.

I didn't lose mine, but it did flip and I had to have revision surgery.

I've left a message at my surgeon's office, just to get their input. Did you have any idea your port had flipped? Any pain/burning that lead you to think something might be wrong? I pretty much know where my port is, I've always been able to feel it very clearly, and now I don't feel a thing.

Nope, I did not have a clue. I had no pain, burning or any other indications that anything was wrong. When I went in to get my second fill, my doctor couldn't find the port. He put me under flouro and that is when we learned it had flipped.

Hi Susan, thx for the response. I actually just got done reading your post about your flip, I just hadn't gotten that far in my search when you responded. I do feel something port-ish now, but it's about an inch to the left of where my port used to be... so no idea if that's it or not. *shrug*

Holy cow, Wheet, that is the oddest thing I've ever heard--and I thought I'd heard it all! :)

I can't wait to hear where your port's gone wandering off to...

Freaky Wheets... mine stays put and if feels like it's going to charge up into my ribcage so I wish it would go wandering. :) Hope you find yours soon!

Mine has migrated from the upper left quadrant, just under my rib cage, more to the center, just off center under my breast bone. Perhaps 4 inches towards the center? Try lying flat, then lifting your legs slightly off the ground, this tightens the muscles of your abdomen and upper quadrant. It helps to locate it. Happy searching!

Here's a thought. Maybe some of the stitches popped and it has turned around a little bit. You know, like shirt buttons that have the 4 holes in them - if the stitches in a couple of the holes come loose the button can turn around on your shirt. Just a thought?!!

Terry :)

My PA said that when you lose that fat layer behind your port, that it can move a little and becomes less of an "outie"!

Wheets-

I posted in the SMMC thread...but like I said, the past couple weeks, I can't feel mine anymore either. Used to be very prominent and easy to feel. Even bothered me sometimes when I hit it on something or during you know what....but now.....I don't notice bumping it anymore or it being "sore" after exersion. When I realized that, I was feeling for it a couple of weeks ago and noticed I couldn't feel it anymore. Although...I also noted that I could for the first time feel my rib cage while lying down:) . So I just made the assumption, like someone stated previously, that I have lost some of the fatty tissue UNDERNEATH the port, and it has caused it to sink down into my tummy. I never really had much fat OVER my port that I could ever feel.

He didn't seem very concerned and was able to fill without flouro. He had to manually "catch it" and find the access side to fill it. Hurt a little but I go for another fill on Monday. I hope he can turn it again. I am going to ask him if it is safe for it to be wandering around.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
