Attention Experienced Sleevers

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of posts from new sleevers about hunger, some saying they have hunger pangs and some saying they are never hungry. Why the difference?

I do get hungry.... I don't feel the "OMG I AM STARVING" sensation that I use to have at every meal time lol! I just gently "feel" it's time to eat :)

I know when I was first sleeved I went through a lot of "Head Hunger."

I was so conditioned to eating anything and everything whenever I wanted that my mind, and subconscious were all going "HEY JERK WHERES THE FOOD!?!" even though my body didn't want anything to do with food. Being on a liquid diet for so long after surgery just compounded the problem. And if I was ever around my family while they were eating it was really bad. So I would end up leaving the room and going for a walk or coming here and checking the forum.

With time I was able to overcome the head hunger and now I barely even want to eat and have to set a timer to remind myself its time for my meals or I would end up skipping them. i'm sure others have other experiences, but that's how it was with me.

Like Nate, I experienced "head hunger" in the first month after surgery. That's where I wasn't truly hungry, but my emotions missed certain foods. It got better with each passing day.

Now almost 7 months out, I rarely feel hungry like I used to. I used to get wicked cravings for carbs that would literally take over my thinking. Not anymore. But I do get the normal, "Hey, it's time to eat" around lunch or dinner. It's not a ravenous feeling. And while sometimes I definitely want a lot, I still can't eat past 4-5oz of food and I feel full quickly. The only way to overeat is to do slider foods or to munch for hours. So yes, I could eat 1-2 hours after dinner. But no, I don't want to.

Ok. Thats understandable so maybe these people aren't really "hungry" in the sense we are preop? Like I am right now ,starving on day two of liquids!! Actually if I drink enough Water it's not so bad! And I have been off carbs for a while before the liquid stage.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
