Questions For First Consult! Ideas?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have used to search box and read a few other posts and I can not find what I am looking for. I thought I would have tons of questions for the surgeon at this point. I have done a fair amount of reading on VST and many of my questions are answered.

What questions did you ask the surgeon at your 1st consultation?

DISCLAIMER: I know that each person is different and has different questions and needs. Also, I already did a search on the forum so please do not suggest this (first sentence).

Thank you for sharing! I look forward to hearing what you asked.

Best,

Sannah

Check this thread out, might give you some ideas: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/47390-international-sleeve-gastrectomy-expert-panel-consensus-statement-best-practice-guidelines-based-on-experience-of-12000-cases

I like that kind of info since I work in science/R&D. I like to know what the doctors, PhDs and MDs, think.

Good luck.

Hey :)

I feel like I should have asked more actually. My surgeon held a seminar before I made my appt. And that was very informative. I was just so excited to be there lol...

I hope you get some good answers, one thing I forgot to ask and later was curious about, was the bougie size. Also I asked about the medicines I was taking and if they were ok to continue before and after.

:)

I also asked how he prevented leaks (clips along staple line, glue, stitching). Pain after surgery. Drains. Expected weight loss in first month. Preop diet. Time to do surgery. Cath. If I would have my own recovery room. How soon I could exercise.

Absolutely! I actually made notes as I read the posts here and typed up about 15+ questions to ask. I knew I would be nervous and probably wouldn't remember everything if I didn't write it down. But once I get in the room with the surgeon he made me feel very at ease and ended up just talking for awhile and I pulled out my list at the end to make sure I didn't forget anything.

Hi Sannah, Im almost 4 months out but I still feel like I just got my new sleeve. After your surgery always remind yourself that you are healing and the struggle is temporary. You will temporarily have to be consumed with treating your body very well and giving it what it needs to heal. It does feel over whelming but it helps to remember its only for a little while. If you start to mourn your old life style thats okay too but I promise you that as time goes on you will be so happy you made this decision. Another thing is try try not to obsess over the scale and never compare your journey to others. I believe as much as we all share on our journey, each and everyone of us has an unique journey so love yourself and think skinny thoughts!

ps... it really really is a tiny tiny amount we can eat before getting full so trust your body, if after a few tiny bites your feeling it. its time to stop. even if it seems you just began hehe

I feel that way every meal lol

best of luck to you!!!!!! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
