Burning Pain

Recommended Posts

Hi. I had surgery on 8/1/06 and my first fill was 1.4 cc on 9/14/06 (more than 6 weeks after surgery)

I have been havinf a lot of pain with solids and it has nothing to do with my band being too tight (I dont think). As soon as I swallow any solids food, no matter how well I chew, it gives me immediate hearburn. From feeling like hard stabbing pain to the burn that feels liek a fire. And its all from my throat to top of stomach. I feel this pain way before the food would have had time to reach my stomach so I know its not directly about the band rtestriction. I cannot eat any solids til late afternoon and only after Ive eaten liquids or mushies every three hours before hand.

Has anyone experienced this? Can you give me some advice or insight? I have not been able to speak with my surgeon yet.

Thank you soo much. Im so uncomfortable :-(

PS when I can finally eat, I do not feel much restriction at all. I'm definately not at my "sweet spot".

It sounds like you're having some reflux, to me. This is an indicator that maybe you're too tight. If you can't eat solid foods until late in the afternoon, I'd say you're too tight. You shouldn't have pain. You shouldn't have burning and you SHOULD be able to eat solid foods for the majority of the day. Once in a while people have some extra tightness first thing in the morning, but that should go away before lunch time.

The "sweet spot" is not necessarily a feeling, it is a state of mind and experience. It is when you're feeling good, following the rules and losing the average 1-2 lbs a week. Some people actually feel restriction, some don't. Personally, I look for that feeling of satiety rather than feeling like my food is struggling to move down the pike. If I'm satisfied for at least 3 hours and don't think about eating or snacking during that time, then I'm satisfied.

Thank you, Dawn. I know it sounds like reflux except for the fact that its as the food is going down. Reflux its when something (acids or whatever) are coming back up. Im not having a problem after the food goes down. its the ride down thats painful.

Thank you for clarification on the sweet spot, though. If you are right, or rather if I am like you, than I think I've found that because I am definitely eating less. There is something telling me to stop.

thanks again:-)

I'm having a bit of reflux right now. I seem to get it while or just after eating as well. Occasionally, it's been painful(especially those first few bites).

I just had an EGD and a upper GI done at my doctor's. I think they said I was having some regurgitation from the stomach to the pouch. At least that's my case at the moment.

I still stick by my original theory. I think you're too tight, even if it's just a little bit.

Good Luck,

Hi Dawn. I think you are right - I hope so, anyway! I spoke with my surgeon yesterday and he think I am too tight so I am going in tommorow for a partial unfill. I really and truly hope this solves the problem. This is soooooooooo painful and not being able to eat solids I have been consuming way too much high calorie liquids and soft foods.

How is everything with you?

K

Just got my results back. Doc says everything looks O.K. His plan is to wait and see since I have had some improvement in symptoms. Hopefully, they will continue to improve.

I'm sure you'll notice some improvement after having some of the fill removed. I know I did. I noticed some improvement immediately, then more of a gradual improvement in the reflux. I still get it if I eat a little too much or too fast, but generally I feel 100% better than I did before the doc removed part of my fill.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
