Post Op Fluids

Recommended Posts

Could someone please give me an idea of how much they ate (drank) at each meal post op on the liquid phase. I know what to have but not sure of the amounts. I dont realyy feel like I have any restriction but everything pretty much hurts going down. I have half a Protein Shake for Breakfast which I add ice to and blend which fluffs up to 1 cup. I can get this down in about 10 minutes - is this too much too fast?

I know what you mean , first day I got home I was worried i wouldn't get enough Protein myself. I figured I needed about 3 a day to get the right amount, but I couldnt even finish one. I was sleeved 8/22 just ahead of you and drank one in about 2 hours, no problem.

Im 5 days post op and i'm so lost about how much and how long as well! It takes 30 mins to finish a 11 oz Protein Shake that is very thin, but thinks like strained creamy Soups i just use the whole can, and it takes a looonnngggg time, im having reflux with every sigle thing im taking in and its painfull. It takes me like a day to finish a can of Soup. My doctor said it should take one hour.

You won't typically feel any restriction or fee "full" while you are on liquids. You should be drinking as much as you can at this point. Try to get plenty of Protein, if you can get 100g or more great. The only exception to this is if protein consumption interferes with hydration. You should be getting at least 64oz/day. I like to use my body weight as a guide for liquid consumption.

Example: I currently weigh 217lbs. So I divide 217 in half = 108.5. So my target today is 108oz.

Yeah, you still have a lot of swelling, it'll get easier daily. Just focus on liquids for now & don't worry about anything else till you can get in 64oz of hydration per day.

If you can't get 64oz of liquid in in a day I would stop worrying about Protein shakes. Try Gatorade G2, Vitamin Water Zero or other similar drinks. If you feel you just have to have Protein try the Isopure RTD (the clear ones) or Cytosport makes a clear Protein Drink also. You may lose some muscle by eliminating protein, but dehydration will end you in the emergency room.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
