Email To Boss About Taking Time Off For Surgery.

Guys, I need help to come up with the correct wording about why I am asking time off for my surgery.

1. I didn't tell anyone what I am doing and still want to keep it quit.

2. I am consultant and I need to fly to the client site for at least one week, so I need somehow to tell that I wouldn't be able to fly for another 3-4 weeks ( not sure what is the save time period after surgery), because they are looking for a new client for me right now.

So from one point I thought I would write that "I am having minor surgery". but I don't think it is minor and I don't want to end up being on the plane 2 weeks after.

If you trust your boss, be honest about your surgery. Heaven forbid there's a complication of some sort and it comes out anyhow. If you don't trust him/her, say you are having surgery to take care of some female health issues that you'd rather keep private, and you won't be able to fly for a month. That's the truth too.

I am fine with putting the word abdominal surgery. but no more then that.

You can say you’re having keyhole abdominal surgery that’s what it is, that’s also how gall bladder surgery is described same for appendix etc

By the way, this is anything but minor.

Do you have benefits? FMLA? Anything you tell your boss should be confidential. There is no reason they would ever need to tell your coworkers what is specifically going on with you. I would say, I'm having surgery on this day and will be out for this long. If they as which, ask If you are required to disclose that. If you are, be honest and also state that this is to be kept confidential. If not, be vague.

I had my surgeon's staff fill out FMLA paperwork and included that with my leave request. Basically just said it was medically necessary major surgery for a life-threatening chronic condition with the surgeon saying I would need up to 7 weeks off, and the FMLA paperwork backed that up.

I had no intention of taking the full 7 weeks, but I noted extra time to buffer for potential complications.

Can ur doctor write a note? I gave my work a note typed at my doctors office. Read: the above named patient will be admitted to hospital on (date) for a surgical procedure. He/she will need to be off from work for 6 weeks and will be able to return, given no complications, on (date).

If this is possible, I would get ur doctor to add the no flying for blank weeks in there..

I would check with HR first. Legally, your employer has to accomodate you, as long as the accomodation doesn't affect your ability to do the job.

I would then talk with your doctor's office, and ask for something in writing, stating how long you won't be able to fly.

When I worked in HR, I wouldn't require details, but I did require something in writing from the surgeon - to protect the company. As an employee, I used that written documentation to protect myself.

You should tell your boss about your impending surgery ASAP, the sooner you tell them, the more understanding they should be.
