Under 180Lbs And Getting Sleeved, Anyone Else?

Recommended Posts

I come from a long line of obesity. My sister had the lap band about 6 years ago and has kept off about 100#. There are so many scary stories about that and follow up that I was sleeved instead. I did not have any health problems but wanted to avoid that. Tonight I am eating a steak salad. My first one. I was wondering how this was going to go. But as long as I chew well its ok. Of course I eat a fraction of what I used to of a salad but more than when I eat a more dense food. I've noticed that it just depends on WHAT you are eating to determine how much of it you can eat. Right now I am just trying everything out. Eating slowly and seeing how much till I feel satisfied. I can't say enough how much I love my new stomach. We get along very well!

So you asked about downside. I am about 9 months out and the only downside is sometimes I will go out to eat and I really want to enjoy a big dinner but that is just not possible. But I look at that as a positive. But nevertheless when u r craving something special and then you can only take a few bites its sometimes disappointing. Lol some things you should consider if u are serious. A lit of people end up with gallbladder problems and end up having them removed. I would ask your doctor if he would consider doing that whole he is doing the sleeve. Also most everyone I know had Hair loss at 4 months. It can get pretty thin but it dies eventually grow back in. I'm lucky I had thick hair. Also re first 24 hours after surgery was HELL! I was so sick from anesthesia. But u can't drink or eat so u just have to tough it out and know it will go away as soon as u r Cleared for liquids. Finally and this one is good and bad....buying new clothes is very expensive! Lol. Seriously though I really didn't think about the fact that literally everything in my closet would be discarded. I'm talking bras. Undies. Hose even shoes. Really suggest you get used to shopping at goodwill, platos closet, clothes mentor, eBay, etc. I've lost weight a million times thru the years but never to the extent that I literally had nothing in the right size. So keep it in mind.

Thank you for your advice. I never considered the gall bladder issues but that is one I will bring up with the surgeon for sure! I have thick hair too so as long as it does not fall out in one patch I will be prepared to take that. How quickly did you resume your normal activities like being back at work and working out - if that was something you did pre- sleeve? X

My goal is 180, but I'm also 5'10", so I'm not sure what BMI you're starting at.

My BMI is 30. I have had a gastric band which was a complete disaster and made me seriously ill I got my BMI down to about 24 than I have bounced back to 30. I try very hard to keep my weight down. My weight has been stable for little while but I need to get back down to having a healthy BMI x

Something happened with my hair on the day of surgery. It's dead and feels terrible. I lose more now than before the surgery but not enough to notice. I have thin and brittle hair anyway but I think the anesthesia had something to do with it with it?? I am hoping to not lose hair after another few months because it will be noticeable since my hair is already thin

Of the 80+ in my Facebook group almost all lost hair starting at month 4. For me my hair thinned all over but no actual bald Patches.

As for my weight BMI. I was a 33 BMI pre surgery at 195 pounds, but lost 20 on pre op diet and then am now down to 137ish. I started at a size 14 pants and now wear a size 2. I'm 5'5".

As for normal activity I was back walking all over by about 4 days out, but no hard core running until week 4. I live in Dallas where there are a lot of doctors and options and I feel like dr Kim was a good doctor that provided lots of guidance on what to do and when. Also look for a doctor with support groups and visits for one year out to check Vitamins and progress. Goodluck!

I didn't look at journals but rather liked online at webmd. Also looked at articles from doctors like David Kim and nick Nicholson.

My dr wouldnt even allow me to get the surgery unless my bmi was at least 40 or 35 with pre existing condition. So for 180lbs that would be 4'8" and 5'0" tall respectfully. I thought this was true for all surgeons, I dont really understand. I understand the band revision to sleeve but not all others. I had to gain 3 lbs at 265 just to be eligible for surgery at my height because I do not have a pre existing condition. Good luck with weight loss everyone!

I couldn't get it done here in the states either with a lower BMI unless I was self pay but the cost was out if this world. That's why I went with going to Mexico. Obesity runs rabid in my family and I was we'll on my way to it. I feel so much better about my weight already!

That's mostly due to insurance requirements. They don't want to pay for anything so they make it unavailable to most patients. If your self pay almost any dr will do it even it the states

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
