Protein Bars

Recommended Posts

I searched some, but didn't find a whole lot on this topic. I would like to keep some Protein Bars around - they are easy to take on the go for errand running, etc. Easier to eat than Protein shakes - which I happen to like - but they take forever for me to get one down because of the volume.

Anyone suggest some good tasting, good for you Protein Bars? So far Ive only tried the EAS carb control one (chocolate Peanut Butter crisp) and it was okay. Im hoping something is out there that tastes a little better. This one has: 240 cal, 8g fat, 27g carbs (6g fiber), 1g sugar, 17g sugar alcohols, and 17g protein.

This isn't something I want to eat daily - just something to have on hand on the days I run errands and know I will be out and about when snack time hits.

I will be a month out on Monday! Woo-hoo!

Thanks for any suggestions!

I have a whole stash of bars for when i need one on the go. I deff don't eat them so the time, but sometimes your on the go or whatever so you know. Anyways i buy individuals first to see what kinds i like. These first two i like are not a good Protein to calorie ratio at all!! But they are good for occasions and as a treat. (Luna bars & cliff bars) soo yummy. These other two are my new recent favorite brands because they are pretty good protein to calorie ratio and ACTUALLY TASTE GOOD lol. ( Think thin protein bars & power crunch) try different flavores, so far I've liked all I've tried in these four brands. Still have more to try eventually. :)

There is a brand at Walmart. Forget which one right now. But they were Smores flavored and were AWESOME.

Protein bars is one place where it's really easy to throw your diet out of wack. So for this reason I try to stay away from any Protein Bar that doesn't deliver 1gram of protein per 10 calories.

Honestly, not many fit this criteria. The ones I use are Premier Nutrition, 280 calories 30g protein.

I generally try to aim for that protein to calorie ratio as well, but you are absolutely right that most to not fit that category at all! I have some of the premier ones and well. I really only like the yogurt Peanut Butter one.. at least i think that's what it is. But u haven't tried the others in a while. Might have to give them another shot now that my tastes have settled. :)

I am very impressed with Quest Bars. They are very dense but taste great, especially if you nuke he for a few seconds. 170 calories and 20 grams Protein. That is a pretty solid ratio. Available from Amazon and GNC

I second the recommendation for the Quest bars. I only use them for emergency Meal Replacements, not a normal thing. But they are really good and the numbers are great. My favorites are the vanilla almond cruch and strawberry cheesecake flavors.

20 carbs is a bit on the high side for bariatric patients.

Carbs, calories, fat.... with all these things to look out for, what should the grams of sugar be?

It seems some bars have as much sugar as they do Protein. If the sugar content is as high, if not higher, wouldn't that defeat the Protein grams?

Coolbreeze.....the sugar is in the carbs. If the carbs are low, the sugar will be too. In these Protein bars, most of the carbs are going to be sugar because they are simple high glycemic carbs.

I don't worry about sugar & fat directly. Those will directly affect the carbs & calories. So those two & Protein are all I really look at aside from ingredients.

As far as calories, I don't use a set number, instead I look at it as a ratio of calories to Protein. My general rule is I don't want my calories any higher than 10 times the grams of protein I consume.

Carbs, I try to stay around 40-50. But I'm not religious about either, just kinda guidelines.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
