HondaCivicDude 29 Posted August 25, 2012 So dr. Joya said because of my weight that i might need a 2nd vsg down the road a year or so to lose the leftover weight. Has anyone gone through this? The way i factor it is ill be down to about 300 lbs from 479 after a year im 3 months post op and down to 420 lbs right now im losing about 4 lbs a week so in a year ill b at around 300 is how i figured it and i know the first year is when u lose what your destined to lose.. So yea i think ill try and save to get the 2nd surgery in 9 months to go from 300 to 220-250 then skin removal to 200 or so...so anyone have a similar experience? FishingNurse 1,211 Posted August 25, 2012 Did he mean you would have another sleeve procedure or just add the DS? (Duodenal switch)
MegInNOLA 531 Posted August 25, 2012 I imagine your doc meant you would continue to the complete DS (duodenal switch)--the VSG was originally just part 1 of a 2-part surgical procedure, but they noticed that patients would lose a lot of weight even before the 2nd surgery was completed; thus our modern-day VSG. The complete DS is sometimes indicated for patients with a more substantial amount of weight to lose. I think you're doing exactly what you need to do to ensure a safe 2nd part of your procedure; your surgeon will determine down the road if it's still necessary. If it isn't, GREAT! If it is, you will have lost a substantial amount of weight and placed yourself in a lower-risk category for the second half of the DS procedure. Win-win. 1 FishingNurse reacted to this

Heatherr 149 Posted August 26, 2012 I'm still losing after a year. It doesn't suddenly stop working at 12 months post op. I don"t get it. Anyhoo, I imagine he did mean teh second part of the DS, but if the sleeve is still working for you, why fix what isn't broke? Good luck.
Catracks 865 Posted August 28, 2012 I really do get tired of hearing about the 1 year expiration date on the sleeve. It simply is not true. The duodenal switch turns the sleeve from a purely restrictive surgery into one that is both restrictive and malabsorptive. The DS isn't as severe as Roux-En-Y, but I am with Heatherr. If it's still working, keep working with it. No reason why you can't lose all the weight on the sleeve.
gustavo52974 369 Posted August 28, 2012 Yes, the "one year" thing is arbitrary and meaningless if they're talking about strictly a 365-day period of time. My surgeon laughed when I asked him about this.
