Three Weeks After Surgery, How Much Should I Lose

Recommended Posts

I everyone, I'm Karen and I'm 22 yrs old. I have about 170 pounds that I want to lose. about three weeks ago I had the sleeve gastrectomy done. the surgery went fine but I had to stay in the hospital because I was throwing up the second I woke up. that scared me to death and I was worried I had made a mistake. now three weeks has gone by and i feel much better, I had my recent check up and found out I lost 20 pounds. I'm very happy but I'm wondering if I should have lost more weight? I'd love some tips from anyone! thank you

What does you doctor think about your weight loss at this point? Every person's journey is different, trying to compare yourself to another will probably only cause unnecessary anxiety and stress.

I think 20 pounds is fantastic in three weeks! What are you eating? Maybe we can help you there.

At my one month post-op they told me my 20+ since surgery was above average, and 30+ since pre-surgery was way above average.

Point is not to brag, but everyone is different. I think some people's expectations are way too high, and measuring the first month or two isn't as important as the whole first six months to one year.

I tend to hear 10-20 lbs a month, 2-5 lbs / week for the first 6-12 months. Even if you only lost 2 pounds per week for a year, that would be 100+ pounds in a year. It adds up quick.

thank you everyone, I guess I did have my expectation really high, I'm starting to eat normal food now or purée. I always start with greens n work my way to Proteins but I get full so fast, that's the point of the surgery haha. I haven't really exercised much but my doctor told me I could start walking and lifting very light weights. any recommendations on types of exercise routines?

You are doing just fine but you need to reverse how you eat... Protein first!! Always!!

Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
