Can I Rant For A Minute?

Recommended Posts

Don't even know what I'm complaining about. I'm having an on going battle with myself.

My pre op liquid diet doesn't start until September 1. I'm allowed 3-4 glucerna shakes a day (ensure but low sugar) and Water. In order to get a head start..I started this diet today (1 week early) but had a cup of cottage cheese at lunch because I felt like I needed something solid. I feel like a failure. I know my liquid diet doesn't start until septb1 but I feel like if I commuted myself to doing this a week early then why can't I stick to it? Am I crazy?

I also hid my scale..I know if I weigh myself from now until next Saturday I will just get discouraged. I'm so stressed out that I wont lose 20lbs by the end of September..although a 4 week liquid diet seems encouraging. Plz give me some advice!!

SkinnyMainnie2Be

you are always allowed to rant at this board

20 lbs - is that what the doc is requiring you to loose pre-WLS?

or is that a goal you would like to reach?

either way - cottage cheese didn't kill you - has lots of Protein

yogurt is good too

drink Protein shakes

PO WLS you need to have 64 oz of Water a day - you can start now

You are not a failure in any way, shape or form

good luck

Maybe for the first couple weeks you can do a mixed diet high in Protein just soft foods and liquids? And work through removing 1 meal of solid food a week until you're down to your 2 week liquid diet. That way you are phasing it out, and hopefully will have an easier time with it.

You are definitely not a failure. Along the way we all make mistakes - and this 2 weeks before your pre-op diet is something you are doing for yourself, so once you pick yourself back up and keep going you will be well on your way to your sleeve. At the very least, you picked cottage cheese - not pizza or chinese or anything super high in calories. Cottage cheese is actually a great Protein source and will be something you'll probably eat plenty of post op.

Likasulema had some great advice - make sure you're getting your Water in so that you're making it a habit.

Hang in there! You'll do fine =)

Thanks everyone. The 20lbs pre op loss is a combination of what my personal goal is as well as what my doctor Wants. My last appointment with him I was 262lbs on his scale (weird because I was 270 on mine). I am fluctuating between 275-278 right now. He did mention that at my next appointment that I cannot gain any weight from the 262lbs that I was at..which stresses me out. So that's why I got the one week extra head start. The diet doesn't bother me. I quite enjoy the glucerna shakes. They taste real good! I just hope I will be down to 260 by September 27.. So that means 1 month to lose 15 lbs..do-able right? Especially on liquids only?

Hi SkinnyMinnie2Be. It's totally doable, even if you ate one cottage cheese every day. My liquid diet was two weeks. It started wtih replacing two meals a day with a Protein Shake and one meal of lowfat Protein and a veggie. Pick one of each lowfat cottage cheese (4 oz) OR 6 oz lowfat, low sugar yogurt; One serving SF Jello, 1/3 cup of fruit. Week 2 was replace all 3 meals with protein shake and one serving of each of previous. I lost 15 lbs in two weeks. Oh, and yes there was one cheat in there of once slice of pizza (on the first day of all liquid). It was a weak moment and I felt terrible, like I had ruined everything, but I picked myself up and moved on. I did not cheat after that. YOU CAN DO THIS!! Just remember it is a finite period of time and worth it for optimal health heading into surgery.

I also needed something solid in my life for the preop diet. I hated the carnation instant Breakfast I was supposed to drink! I ate a lot of cottage cheese-- I even told my NP at the surgeons office and basically got her blessing except when I had to do Clear Liquids only the day before. Lets not fool ourselves. Restrictive diets of any kind are SUPER HARD, if they were not everyone would be thin.

Go find that scale! You will amazed What a few days of the liquid diet will do! I put myself on a modified liquid diet, Protein Shakes for breakfast and lunch, sensible dinner and tons of Water. Lost 8 lbs in 4 days. Totally keeps me motivated!

There are days when I am able to get in my 64 oz., but I try for 32 oz. I still drink crystal light and other such drinks that are more economical, but thanks to God I am shrinking and I am happy to say that today I found several pieces of clothing that I willl soon be able to wear thanks to my 21 year old neice who forgets to take some of her things home and she is now larger than me. A few weeks ago she weighed in at a little over 300 lbs. She is in College and she is stressed eating all the time. Oh, how I remember those days, but my weight at her age was 250 lbs and I grew bigger through the years. Praise God I stared late, but I am glad for the courage and change to be afforded a way to improve.

My NUT told me that it was ok of I had some yogurt or cottage cheese on my pre op diet. I just needed to make sure that most of my Protein came from shakes.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
