Lovenox Injections After Surgery....?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone else had to do the Lovenox Injections after surgery. My doctor said that I would take shots of Lovenox in the tummy for 14 days after surgery.

Of course that scares me to death...the thought of giving myself a shot!

Has anyone else had to do this post-op? What was it like for you...did it hurt? Any info would be great!

Hi. I had to inject Lovenox pre and post surgery because I take blood thinners on a daily basis. It's not bad. Just look at YouTube videos on how to inject so u dont bruise yourself. If u squeeze the skin of where u will be injecting it doesn't hurt. Better safe than sorry. Good luck!

My surgeon said I could skip it because my BMI was already low enough by the time of my surgery that he was not concerned about blood clots.

I had to have them in the hospital. They hurt! Talk about exercise instead, but remember, no matter what you have to do, it's worth it in the end.

I had to give myself injections for 14 days as well. It want that bad, the poke it easy but the medicine hurts a little going in. Those 14 days go by quickly!

Would you rather have Lovenox injections for a few days, or be on Coumadin daily for the rest of your life??

I developed a 70% occlusive portal vein thrombosis 10 days after surgery. I will now be on anticoagulant therapy....forever. And because of that medication, I cannot do many things I want: roller derby, football, snow skiing (I'm not joking, these were on my pre-surgery "want to" list, and now I can't). If I lean up again my bathroom sink while brushing my teeth, I bruise.

Take the darn Lovenox! Deal with is for 14 days! Get on with life! You can do it!

Lovenox injection needles are very small. It doesn't hurt, more like a pinch if you do it right. Thumb & forefinger about 2-3 inches apart, pinch up the skin FIRMLY (that kind of numbs the spot), clean & inject. It may burn a little after but DON'T rub or scratch the spot. It also helps to take a deep breath and exhale as you inject. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
