Study Results About Band/sleeve/bypass

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just came across this study published June 2012... about the three common types of bariatric surgery.

The quote that I found the most interesting was....

The rate of a gastrointestinal leak, considered a serious complication, was three-tenths of one percent (0.3%) for sleeve gastrectomy versus four-tenths of one percent (0.4%) for gastric bypass patients. The percentage of procedures requiring reoperations due to complications was 15.3 percent for the gastric band, 7.7 percent for gastric bypass and 1.5 percent for sleeve gastrectomy.

And... A third study on sleeve gastrectomy conducted by the Naval Medical Center in San Diego found while gastric bypass patients lost more of their excess weight after the first year, 72.3 percent versus 63.7 percent, there were no statistically significant differences in excess weight loss after two and five years. This study examined 486 patients, half had gastric bypass and half had sleeve gastrectomy.

Here is the link to the article...

Good luck to all the Sleevers!

This quote from that article really stood out for me - wow - safer than gallbladder and hip replacement surgery.

"These mortality and complication rates are lower than those typically associated with gallbladder or hip replacement surgery."

Isn't science neat? If only more people did their research, including doctors. Good stuff.

That is good news!! Thank you!

I'm waiting for insurance, should be any day! I love that we have all this support! I have a friend that had her VSG June 2011 made it to her goal of 90 lbs lost June 2012. She looks wonderful!!! She was the model patient, came home after surgery only took pain meds the first couple days home. Then healed great, stayed on the diet perfectly, walked daily and she looks beautiful!! She is the one that recommended I switch from the band to VSG. We even have the same insurance and the same surgan. We are in the Sacramento CA area. So fingers crossed I will have the same great story and outcome!!! One mistake I made was going on the complication forum.... Scary!!! Now I'm starting to second guess my disition. From the gallbladder problems to the leaks. So I will talk to my Doctor, I wanted to know the percentage of people that have any of these complications. These numbers that you posted have really helped me!!!

:-) thanks!!!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
