My name is Sharon (Ronee) and I am 58 years old. Married and live in KCMO. I have approval through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois for my bariatric surgery, however I switched surgeons, so I am now having to meet the requirements of a new group, before being scheduled. Have to admit to a little bit of nervousness about the whole thing, wondering if it really is the right thing to do. Maybe I am just having cold feet....Sharon

Ronie, you are doing the right thing. You are just having cold feet at the moment. I was sleeved on 4/10 and I'm doing great. I'm not saying that it is easy, but the sleeve is just one more tool to use to lose weight. This site is a God-sent. It has calmed a lot of my concerns and I know that I am not alone in this journey.

It's also good to have a forum for us older folks. We tend to lose weight slower than the 20-30 yr olds! Let us know when you are having your surgery and we will be there to support you. :)

Thanks GrammyK, I really appreciate the words of wisdom. Congrats on how well you have been doing. I had my first consult on Wednesday and have to get a couple of things done before I get scheduled. But I will share the date when I get it. Feeling calmer today, guess I needed a good nights sleep to let it all gel in place. Thanks again! Sharon

Hi my name is Shawn (female) I am 57 years old, I was 56 when I started this journey in March 2012. Right now I am waiting for my Medicare HealthNet insurance to approve me. My insurance packet was sent to them Sept. 7th. My situation is a little different. When I had my upper gi they found a problem. I have Achalasia. When I have my surgery my Dr. Podkameni, Arizona is going to do what is call Heller Myotomy on my esophagus and if I do well he will do the vertical sleeve at the same time. If there are problems I will do the sleeve 6 to 8 weeks later. I am praying that my Dr. can do both at the same time. Can I please ask for prayers please. I will let you know my surgery date as soon as I know it. I am so excited. Not nervous yet. Sharon I feel we are doing the right thing. I watch a youtube video and a Dr. did this surgery on his 12 yr. old neice. So I thought if she can do it I can too. I wish I could remember the Drs. name, darn I forget. When I find his name I will tell you. Good luck everyone. I am so glad that they have this group for Sleever Sleevers!

Hi Shawn, You are right this is the right thing to do. When I think of all the diet books and dumb diets that I have been on and failed at, I know I am finally doing something that makes sense. I also watched some you tube videos about people who had had the sleeve done and the amazing weight losses they achieved, so I know it works, it is a tool. Good luck on your surgery and I will send prayers your way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
