I am just over three weeks post surgery and am beginning to move from mostly liquid to mushy type food. Is there any type of cold Cereal that could be eaten at this stage? Or even in a couple of weeks (when I am a month to six weeks from surgery) I'm thinking of something like Rice Krispies. Something that can be chewed and chewed into a mush but still eaten. This was my favorite Breakfast food before surgery. Any ideas?

Sorry. Phone app. You can't drink while you eat, so that's why they say no. Every doc is different. But that's a lot of starch, calories, carbs, ect that have little to no Protein. Also those foods are still solid, so when you go to full solids you can ask your surgeon.

I ate cold cereal with no problem during mushies and Rice Krispies were one of the better ones because they got very mushy very quickly- Although I didnt/couldnt eat a lot it was very filling. I would ask your dietician if that is acceptable on your particular doctor's plan.

"You can't drink while you eat, so that's why they say no" having said this and using that logic- one would NEVER be able to eat any stew or Soup... The reference to this is drink WHILE eating... as in take a bite wash it down with liquid. NOT liquidy foods that have to be chewed..... That's like saying I'm going to mush a bananna into a Protein shake but that's a nono because I cant chew the bananna and drink the shake...

I knew someone with a colostomy who ate Life cereal mixed with vanilla Protein Shake and then she microwaved it for 30 seconds to make it mushy.

My soft food diet list allows for cold cereals (rice krispies, kix, Cheerios, etc)- for my plan, this stage is where a nutritionally balanced diet is the goal, so they fall into the starch category, of which I'm supposed to eat a couple of servings a day.

Thank you to everyone who commented on the cereal question. I am transitioning into full regular foods, so I might ask the nurse at my surgeon's office, but glad to hear I'm not the only one who has at least thought of it. I'm trying to work into three "square meals" with my Protein Drinks in between as "snacks." I know there are several Kashi type cereal with quite a high Protein content and lower in fat. They are a bit too crunchy for me at this stage. But, I may try Rice Krispies. I'll let you know. Thanks again.

Special K makes a high Protein cereal that tastes good! I mix it with my yogurt and it's a really good meal! I like the Fage yogurt best-low carb hi Protein. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
