Can I Do The Surgery Alone?

Recommended Posts

Kids are in school and the surgery is 300 miles away. A quick non-stop 1 hr flight from my home. I would like my husband to stay home with the kids, my surgery is Sept 17 at Forest Park in Dallas and I will be released on Wed. the 19th. Can I do it alone?

Thanks for the help!

In my opinion u really need someone there with you. Not only for the support but also be you are still in pain quite a bit when you leave. I had my surgery at Forest Park also...good luck!

I don't think they let you drive home after the surgery, but you could take a cab to the airport.

Everyone recovers differently. I probably could've done it myself, but others have had issues and difficulties. Tough call.

Yay your in great hands!! I too had my surgery three weeks ago today at Forest Park! Who is your doctor? Dr Barker is awesome and i love his staff. The hospital is gorgeous and if you decide to go with the V.I.P rooms they are beautiful almost like staying in a hotel.

As far as doing it alone... Ive heard of people doing it alone and Dr Barkers office says its ok you just have to have someone to drive you when you are released vecause you arent able to drive. In my opinion it is possible but i think it would just make things so much easier if you had someone there for support. The only pain i really remember having was the gas pains as far as the incision areas not too much that i felt more at home(of course because i wasnt drugged up as good as in the hospital) but you will do just fine. I didnt have not one rude nurse or anyone on staff show any type of rudeness. They were all so helpful. Good luck to you! Keep in touch let us know how it goes!

This question was meant for me! I did it on my own. I wish I didn't have to but I did. I did have someone drop me off and pick me up though. The pain I had was mostly gas but everyone is different. If there is someone to go with you then the support would be great but if not then you can do it!

Don't take much with you. You most likely will not be allowed to lift anything more than 10 or 15 pounds.

I was alone, got dropped off 6am last Tuesday and picked up Thursday afternoon. I enjoyed being alone, the doctor called my mom when I was done and when I got to the floor the nurse called to update.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
