I'm so curious about this. I get thirsty, a lot. Not to an abnormal degree but running around the house, kids, etc. makes me thirsty and I often guzzle a large glass of Water, or more.

After the surgery, will I not get thirsty, or will I but just a sip will quench it?

I am 3 weeks out and still get thirsty often. I am one of the rare people that by day 3 pot -op could almost drink unlimited amounts so it has not been a problem except to remember not to guzzle just take a few sips and wait a few minutes before doing it again. I actually went from the medicine cups to a childs 12 oz sippy cup to control my self for the first week then used to go coffee mugs so the output of liquid was controlled. I now use cups, mugs and snapple bottles and just limit the amount I put in them or having them near me because I will easily drink it until its gone. I found one other person like myself on here and they like me easily had been drinking 100+ oz. a day pre surgery.

I am always thirsty and battle dry mouth, something I never had a problem with before surgery. I recommend to practice sipping your Water now because when I drink more than 2 ounces within 15 minutes I burp and it comes right up. You still have to get down 64oz a day, which is hard in the beginning. I'm 7 day post op now

You're probably going to be as thirsty or more! Your body needs Water to run, and especially when it's doing the extra work of breaking down fat!

Not to mention that you will be taking smaller sips and smaller quantities of food (including liquid foods at first). So you will need to drink more often than before, because your intake will be smaller than it is now.

You will definitely get thirsty......and it's really important that you address that right away when it happens. Dehydration is a big problem post-op and you can avoid it if you drink regularly (so much so that you can avoid the thirst by "nipping it in the bud"!).

You won't be able to "guzzle" in the beginning. In fact, even small sips may be painful and cause cramping. But that will change over time. It's usually as a result of the swelling of the stomach post-op. It took me about 7-8 to be able to take even a small sip without cramping/pain, but it improved dramatically after that. I am now more than 3 months post-op and I can take several large drinks in a row without pain. Though I do fill up pretty quick!

This is definitely a fear of mine as well. I am having surgery in a few weeks and I work with a doctor and have already arranged to get IV fuids just in case I freak out! I am really active and always drinking water- this has been my only fear about getting this surgery. But thank you for the posts above because getting sleeved outweighs my fear about being thirsty. Everything I have read and heard tells me "this too shall pass". I think we'll be okay, infact I know we will. It would be foolish of me to think there wasn't going to be some sacrifice from this surgery that would hit home for me. I wish you luck! I wish us all luck- we will get through thanks to this invaulable website. <3

I wonder if you can stretch your stomach back out with too much liquid? I want to try really hard to never feel too full, because then I'll worry I'm stretching my nice tiny little stomach out!

As far as I understand it (and I'm no expert, by any means), stretching your stomach takes REAL EFFORT!

liquids tend to pass through the stomach quite quickly and easily. In order to stretch your stomach out, you have to overeat to the point of pain and nausea on MANY REPEATED and closely timed occasions. Honestly, I think you would get tired of being sick and vomiting etc. before you were actually able to stretch the stomach enough to "fail" the VSG surgery.

Of course that would all be LONG after the surgical healing is completed (can take as long as 8 months post-op!). If you put too much into your stomach in the first few weeks/months post-op you could cause life-threatening complications, leaks, rupture, etc. (Just pointing that out for those on the forum who are new and don't necessarily know......).

To stretch your stomach significantly and permanently, you have to work at it...........and hopefully no one here on VST is going to self-sabotage that badly!

liquids are highly unlikely to do it........and the pain will make you stop when you've passed the "full" point.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
